Sheriff Foavleu returned from Pay-son Pay-son yesterday where he had been to at tend the preliminary examination oi Dean, the man who shot John Reid ar that place. Dean was arraigned before H. W. Barnett, tbe precinct Justice, charged with assault with intent to commit murder. He pleaded not guilty and the Court at once proceeded to tollhouse toll-house of the wounded man and took his deposition which was to the effect thai Dean came into the saloon where lleul was and asked him if it was true that he had said that he (Dean) had drawn a knife on him on the 4th. Reid replied re-plied that others saw the knife drawn as well as him. Dean then called Reid a liar and angry words were used on both sides and Reid told Dean if he wanted a fight he guessed he could get it. More words ensued and Reid started out of the saloon and Dean asked him if he was going for a rock, to which he answered if he hail one he would use it or words to that effect. Dean stepped to the door of the saloon and met Reid as he was returning and .fired his revolver, the ball taking effect ! in tiie breast. Further examination was waived I and Dean was bound over in 2,00o bonds to await the action of the Grand Jury. J. W. X. Whitecotton is Dean's attorney, at-torney, and before proceeding w ith the case yesterday be asked that spectators specta-tors be excluded from the courtroom, which was done.
