C5 The Emery County Review, Tuesday, September 30, 2008 Living Raptors Dinosaurs of the Sky CEU Prehistoric Museum presents raptor program free to public The College of Eastern Utah Prehistoric Museum presents Living Raptors – Dinosaurs of the Sky Oct. 15, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Peace Gardens in Price. The program will feature live birds of prey and is sponsored by the Hutchings Museum of Natural History in Lehi, and the State Board of Education. Ben Woodruff owns the birds and runs a non-profit wildlife education group called Skymasters Wildlife Foundation. He has been training birds of prey for 21 years. This raptor program features live birds of prey. They have a wide range of rap- tors for you to see. They will have a golden eagle, great-horned owl, peregrine falcon, harris hawk, gyr falcon, screech owl, and a moluccan cockatoo, and more. This program will teach about how these similar species have very different adaptations from each other based on the prey they hunt and the environment in which they live. The hawks and eagle particularly demonstrate a foot configuration that diverged from theropod dinosaurs. This is an educational program that is very upbeat and entertaining. The samples have been sent to two separate laboratories for DNA testing. It could take as long as three weeks to receive the DNA results. Even though DWR biologists don’t have con- things after they leave any of these waters: they must allow us to decontaminate their boat for them, or they must decontaminate their boat themselves before placing it on another water.” If you want DWR personnel to decontaminate your boat, they’ll do it for free using special decontamination units. These units spray water that’s 140 degrees Fahrenheit. “For a 16- to 18-foot boat, this process takes about 20 to 30 minutes,” Dalton says. “Once we’re done, your boat is decontaminated, and you can launch it on another water.” If you choose to decontaminate your boat yourself, Dalton says you must do the following: - Clean plants, fish, mussels and mud from your boat; - Drain the water from all areas of your boat and equipment; - Dry your boat and equipment in the sun before using it again. In the fall, you must dry it 18 days in the sun. Quagga mussels are a serious threat to Utah. Quagga mussels can: Jeopardize essential power and water infrastructures; destroy recreation areas and equipment; severely damage ecosystems, displacing native and sport fish species; cost millions of dollars to control.
