They also look forward to seeing the familiar faces of those they have developed friendships with over the years. The Fall Festival ride along the Wedge, Sept. 26-28 drew a number of new participants this year as 50 riders participated. It also drew a participant who has been coming to the festivals since the first year. Charles Coltrain, or as everyone at the festivals affectionately refers to him, “Charlie,” and his wife, Shirley, set out from their home in Salt Lake City twice a year to ride in the San Rafael Swell with the people they now call friends. “It’s like I’m known down here anymore,” he said. “Lamar will get up at the Spring Festival and I’m part of the tease, and you don’t tease people you don’t like, especially in public.” Coltrain began coming to the events with his brother who lived in Price at the time. After eight years, his brother left for New Mexico, but by that time, COltrain explained, it had become “like a family tradition.” So, he “just let that be [his] excuse,” and he kept coming.
