Salem Hills High wrote a new chapter of their history on Thursday, Nov. 20th, 2009 as they had their first theatrical production. Ms. Bonnie Hunt, the school's drama teacher, chose West Side Story to be the debut. The musical is ba,sed off of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with the characters coming from two rival gangs in New York during the 1950's. It is a unique musical in that it has a tragic ending that carries a serious message of overcoming racial intolerance and learning to love everyone. In regards to her choice of West Side Story, Ms. Hunt said, "All the characters are searching for a place where they belong. Here at Salem Hills we are searching for the'same thing. We've come from various backgrounds and even rival high schools. We came to Salem Hills with hopes of finding a Courtesy photo JETS AND SHARKS: Salem Hills High students during the closing night of West Side Story. place to belong- "a place for us." We have learned a lot about coming together throughout this production." The production ran on Nov. 20, 21, 22, and 24, 2009 arid was a great success for the Skyhawks.
