I Dons stifle Grantsville Bryan Redd STAFF W R I T E R Tough Don defense set the tempo in a huge 75-67 victory over the visiting Grantsville Cowgirls on Thursday, Dec. 4. The crowd enjoyed a great rendition of the national anthem sung by Samae Smith, and some amazing Dons basketball. The first quarter was a tight contest; neither team enjoyed more than a two-point lead. The Dons' defense was aggressive, holding Jensen and Wells in check. As the quarter ended, Grantsville led 16-14. The Lady Dons' offense came alive in the second quarter. SF put a half court press on Grantsville, creating turnovers that led to easy baskets. The Cowgirls struggled with fouls trying to defend the post and the Lady Dons capitalized with 19 points and a 33-28 half-time lead. The third quarter was a plethora of steals/assists, rebounding and high scorr ing for the Lady Dons as they outscored the Cowgirls 23-9 and ended the quarter with a commanding 56-37 lead. The Dons withheld the surging Cowgirls' offensive barrage of 20 points and a full-court press that narrowed the lead to 67-57. The Lady Dons converted free throws and rebounded strong to defeat The SF basketball gym was rocking Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008. The gym was packed with cheering fans. The Dons' sixth man band members played and cheered. The action was fast and when the buzzer sounded Springville escaped with a 48-47 victory. In the first quarter, both teams played intense manto-man defense. Springville jumped out to a 6-2 lead late but Jessie Anderson drained a three-pointer at the buzzer, closing the gap 5-6. The Dons* offense came alive in the second quarter, with 15 points off great passes and inside scoring. Spanish Fork held Springville to 10 second quarter points. The SF bench provided scoring and defense. The Dons led at halftime 20-16. Spanish Fork struggled with the Red Devil press in the third quarter, scoring five points while turning the ball over 14 times. The Devils scored 16 and took a 29-25 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was basketball at its best. The Lady Dons scored 22 points, Katelyn Elliott played tight man-to-man defense and dished the ball with five assists. Both teams traded baskets and free throws before Springville opened a fourpoint lead. The girls overcame some questionable officiating and stuck together. Brynlie and Erin stepped up big on offense. Rachelle rebounded well and Katelyn's defense and leadership gave us a chance to win,*' said Coach Johnson. "We need to cut down on turnovers. This was a great game and I am proud of the Lady Dons' effort." Brynlie Neilsen and Erin Redd led SF with 13; points each. Spanish Fork had 30 rebounds, 14 assists, 12 steals and two blocked shots. South Valley Flash HOT HAND: The Dons' Erin Redd led all scorers with 20. Grantsville 75-67. "This was a huge team effort. Our SF girls never let up, and we worked hard on offense and defense. These girls believe in each other, the team and the coaches. I am so proud of each and every girl that played and stepped up tonight," said Coach Aubrey Johnson. Three players scored in double figures: Erin Redd 20, Rachelle Remund 16 and Jessie Anderson 15.; The Dons' defensive specialist was Katelyn Elliott with five steals.
