At least they do in college and the pros, but high school coaches don't get a lot of attention. While college and pro coaches get paid lots of dough, and get lots of attention — good and bad — high school coaches don't get mentioned a whole lot. If a team is having a 2007 New England Patriots type season, the key players get a lot of props, but the coach is usually nowhere to be found when the accolades start to roll. When you think about it though,a high school coach is more important than a pro coach, and at least equally as important as a college coach. The high school coach is working with kids that are just starting to mature, just figuring out they are good at sports, looking for direction, guidance, emotional support, etc. Aubrey Johnson is one of those coaches — the kind of high school coach that does it all for her players. Coach Johnson took over the Spanish Fork girl's basketball program last year, •beginning what she hopes to be a long journey. Johnson is a graduate of Timpanogos High School (2000), where she was a star bas- WINS 5 5 4 2 2 1 0 m^M LOWER B-LEAGUE WINS TEAM 5 Double D Bolt Moab Auto Group 3 2 Blaine Evans Trucking 2 JNB Homes Security Home Mortgage 2 1 Goodfellow Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News HUDDLE UP: Aubrey Johnson coaches the Spanish Fork girls basketball team during a timeout last year at the Payson game. ketball player, and she followed that up with a basketball stint at Southern Utah University. She graduated from SUU with a degree in English — and along with her degree, she snagged a husband, Derek Johnson. The Dons have gone through a number of girls coaches in the last decade, so when they hired Coach Johnson, they were hoping they had someone to stick with them for the long haul. It had the chance to end soon — her husband got a good job offer in Arizona — but Johnson had made a commitment to her girls, and with the supportive husband turning down the job, she kept on working to build a dominant program. To help her mold her girls and her basketball program, Coach- Johnson has lots of good hoops role models. Her favorite is Pat Summit, the women's coach at Tennessee, a woman who does it better than anyone else. Not a bad choice to mold a program after, and for the lucky girls that get the chance to play for Johnson now and down the road, they will be getting a coach that puts her team, and her C-LEAGUE TEAM WINS Car Guys 5 Bar Slash 4 Hickory Kist 2 TKO Drywall 2 Kevin Madson & Assoc., 1 Structure Remodeling 1 school, high on her priority list. A quote from Pat Summit helps motivate Coach Johnson and her players. "The amount of success you are capable of enjoying and the pleasure you are capable of feeling, is equal to the number of people you are willing to share it with — go ahead, try it, share a little." So when you check out the Lady Dons, know that the lady running the show is the best person for the job. The girls that get to play for her are being molded and prepared for great things.
