Show schools Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2008 • B5 SF band takes third at BYU Salem Hills to grant a wish Christene Choate STAFF W R I T E R On Oct. 7, 2008, the Spanish Fork High School j&* marching band placed third in competition at BYU. Along with Spanish Fork, five other schools participated in this competition, Ogden, West Jordan, Weber, Payson and Bear River. The band is judged on ' & l«0**; four basic categories: musical performance, how well the band knows their mu•>*>(•*»# > y.W /^m»J sic and performs it; visual •-^<r-'^»W:i| performance, how well the band created pictures on the field, marched together, and s^-;-? matched their pictures with the music; drumline perfor•Jfllf! j&i mance; and color guard performance. ^^^H j The band practices every day from 6:30-7:30 a.m., plus an extra Thursday af1 ^K ^ ternoon rehearsal from 3-5 - *^^H r^^B - •1B p.m. The band spends about six to seven hours a week m,. .. practicing. ' - • •, , Ventriloquist to perform for SHHS Make-a-Wish fundraiser Bring your family to see Sparks and Spanky, the ventriloquist show featured at the Great Hawk Gorge at Salem Hills High School, Nov. 3* from 5-7 p.m. At the age of eleven, Jason Sparks read a Goosebumps book about a dummy that came alive, and his dream of being a ventriloquist was born. Jason, a student at Brigham Young Univer^ sity who also works for NPR(National Public Radio), began his career as a ventriloquist (vent) at age 10 by completing the Maher Studios Home Course of Ventriloquism. Originally from Middletown, Maryland, Jason has performed at many corporate, educational and social functions as an entertainer and promoter in the United States and South America. He was featured- in the Boy Scouts of America February 2000 issue of Boys' Life magazine, and on Maryland cable television's "Arts Beat" program. He is an Eagle Scout and a member of the North American Association of Ventriloquists. Sparks and Spanky is a comedy act featuring ventriloquist Jason Sparks, sidekick Spanky and other friends. Whether.the subject is serious or just plain funny, Sparks and Spanky entertain, instruct and inspire using a finely tuned sense of humor to make the point, or make you laugh.
