Africa Is Life Changing is a global network of caring individuals dedicated to relieving the suffering and uncertainty of underprivileged women and children in Africa. This organization sponsors several projects to help make sure these people have food to eat, and that they receive an education. One major project involves giving a family a baby chicken and food for the chicken for six months. After six months, they then can sell the eggs or use the eggs to feed the family. Another project is to provide plastic bags that are used by these families to weave into baskets, purses, hats, etc. They can then use these items for themselves or sell them to get money to pay for their education. For more information contact their website: www.africaislifechanging.org. Eugene Colledge conducted the meeting. Doug Lund gave the prayer and Kent Dansie led the pledge and made arrangements for the program. In the midst of the work, Toby Harding said that was not the case, and that the council had given him authority to spend the full amount. After several rounds of opinion, the matter was dropped. Fisher also objected to the previously agreed plan to have city officials paint and carpet their offices at their own expense and to their own taste. He brought up the specter of the city recorder installing pink carpeting and the financial director installing blue carpeting. "This is the last thing in the world that we want," he said. In other business, the city approved an amended budget, and tabled a proposed ordinance regarding fencing and a proposed ordinance authorizing "electronic attendance" at city government meetings. Jerry Johnson said that he would put forth another version of the fencing ordinance. Sidewalk detours Jen Allen STAFF WRITER You may have seen the corners of 200 North, 300 North and 400 North under construction on Main Street, City officials are saying that the corners were due for an upgrade to be in compliance with the ever-changing ADA requirements. In the past few weeks, city staffers have joked cautiously about the requirements made by the ADA and how, because of the "consistently changing nature of the requirements, the city could be as much as 20 years behind. Although the city is not 20 years behind, they acknowledge that because of the road overlays that have occurred on those particular streets, the corners were in desperate need of being redesigned. The project at these particular intersections of Main Street should be completed within the next two weeks. Two landowners, Jed Huntington and Lynn Leifson, whose land lies just outside of the, Spanish Fork City bo^idaries, were requesting to be annexed into the city. Huntington and Leifson have a unique request in that their houses are within the city boundaries, but the rest of their land is a part of Utah County. Ultimately the council decided to deny the request, due to the need for planning they feel the river bottoms community must have before being annexed into city boundaries., The council also discussed the possibility of acquiring two private streets from the East Fairway Meadows and Fairway Meadows developments. Although no agreement was reached, the council extended to the citizens of those developments the opportunity to meet with thenHome Owners Associations to come up with an offer for the city to take over the streets. _ 7:00 pm , .
