Raising a family is a lot of hard work interspersed with moments of indescribable joy. If we don't take the time to share our dear (and not so dear) motherhood experiences, the younger moms will think they are alone. When new moms lock arms with old moms, we are a formidable force for good and much cheaper than therapy. We spend the first half of our lives acquiring and accumulating. We spend the last half unloading and thinning out. We come to understand that less is more. We spend the first half of our lives wishing everybody would leave us alone so we can get something important done. We spend the last half of our lives trying to get those same people to come back, because we realize they are the important part. Menopause ushers us what makes grandparenting so grand. Motherhood follows the same cycle of life as in nature, with spring time, summer, autumn and winter - each following the other in an eternal round. Whether we're starting out or ending up, we all have something valuable to offer each other. We start out feeling like we're giving up something more important to raise children and end up realizing raising children is Janene Baadsgaard the important part. We start out thinking we're sacrificfrom a fertile time for our ing our personal developbodies into a fertile time ment and end up realizing for our minds. We are given the process of learning to our bodies back, though a love someone is the ultilittle wider and sporting a mate road to personal deC-section scar or two. Now velopment. The worst part is that the opponent for the house race claims that she is running on an ethical platform. However, her supporters are the ones that are continually going through the neighborhoods and taking down the political signs for the incumbent, Mike Morley. This removal of signs from private property is a criminal offense. Most of the signs are stolen in the middle of the night; if I were able to catch one of the offenders, I will gladly turn them in to the law. Debbie Swenson's claims that if elected she will form an ethics committee to investigate conflicts of interest. That is interesting since she would be the first one that should be investigated. She openly admits that she works for the public school system, and in the same breath, she openly admits that she will work hard to increase public school funding. She openly is admitting to a conflict of interest. She will not get my vote! I asked Debbie Swenson about the issue. She informed me that as a member of the Nebo School Board, she receives $250 per month, plus $50 for a travel allowance. If elected to the state legislature, she will give up her seat on the school board. I would like to discuss one viewpoint. We are electing someone to represent all of the citizens of the district at the state level of government. The contest is between a republican candidate, Mr. Mike Morley; and a democratic candidate, Ms. Debbie Swenson. The one issue is: who will have the best capability to represent the district in the legislature? Mike Morley is a member of the controlling party of the house. He is on committee's and subcommittee's, as chair in many instances. He is a member of the majority caucus, which sets the legislative agenda and controls the flow of discussion. He has a four year record of very good results for the district and is in a position to influence legislation in a positive manner for the citizens of the district. Re-electing him to office will continue the growth and influence that our district has at the state level, since seniority is one of the criteria for legislative influence. Ms. Swenson may be a very nice person, but she has no standing at state level. If she is elected, the district will lose significant influence in the legislature. She will not be a member of the majority party; she will not be in the majority caucus; she will not be a part of the discussions that control the flow of debate. It seems like electing Ms. Swenson will cause a loss of representation at the state level, not an increase of representation. I have a hard time seeing that, for any of the issues that Ms. Swenson has raised in her campaign, she will have any possibility of causing any action to be taken at the state level. In addition, we will lose four years of seniority and continued influence at the state level. This doesn't sound like a wise decision from my perspective. Douglas G. Bowen Spanish Fork |
