At the end of the night, Spanish had turned the ball over 22 different times and failed to hit crucial shots down the stretch. Brighton ran away in the fourth and gave the Dons their second loss of the season by the score of 76-59. Spanish Fork's intensity was sky-high to start the game. On one play, a Bengal swiped the ball from senior Shaun Peterson. Rather than cry foul, the quick point guard hustled back court and dove on the hardwood to knock away a bounce pass which would've resulted in an easy score. His teammate recovered the ball and marched back to the other end. A few seconds later and Petie was found at the top of the key for a big three-pointer which ignited the Don Dome. Spanish Fork played excellent team defense until midway through the second. From there, Brighton went on a 9-0 run that resulted from blocked shots, steals and great post-up plays. Despite the momentum loss, the Dons were fortunate to carry a 36-32 lead at the break. Brighton remained in their groove and soon had regained the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. However, Spanish Fork benefited from Kevin Roberts rebounds (8) and athleticism to keep it close. Naulu was shut down offensively but made several spectacular no-look passes. He found Gardner behind the arc for a much needed trey which evened the score. But the Bengals answered right back with a trey of their own. Three minutes remained in the third when Coach Bailey called timeout with his team trailing by five. Unfortunately, Brighton again went on another scoring rampage. Their excellent hustle plays on the defensive end led to open shots including some dazzling dunks that entertained fans none more so than a first quarter alley-oop. Another fine hustle play was witnessed in the fourth when big man Juan Vergara made a nice loose ball rebound. He saved it just before falling into the band section. Roberts recovered and threw a strike to a streaking Cameron Catmull who gently kissed it off the glass for two. The Bengals challenged the Dons to beat them inside for three periods but it just wasn't meant to be. Three Dons were in double figures. Naulu had 15 with seven assists while Gardner and Roberts both chipped in 10 a piece. - T |
