Talented junior Matt Anderson must have captured a whiff of the breeze as he overwhelmed Lone Peak's Alex Lindstrom at 119 pounds pinning Lindstrom early in the first round. Not to be outdone, sophomore Caleb Ashworth followed suit with a relatively easy 17-2technicalfall victory at 125. Ashworth simply toyed with his opponent, Seth Connors, releasing him twice just to immediately take him down again. Senior co-captain Rod Cox was not as fortunate in his 130 pound battle with two time and defending State Champion, Paul Johnson. Cox not only had to battle a worthy opponent, but his old enemy, asthma, throughout the six minute foray. Cox could never sustain his breathing and, in the end, suffered a disappointing 17-2 loss to Johnson. Tom Clark nearly pitched a shutout at 135 pounds against Lone Peak's Zac Brewer coming away with a one sided 8-1 decision.- - • Junior Hadley Thorpe found his way back onto the varsity mat and showed no sign of rust as he only need three minutes to put the hurt on the Knights Todd Dearing with a second round lightning quick pin. Leading 45-18 at this point, any anticipated drama between the Dons and the Knights clash had long since been ended. With only one match left to wrestle, coach Dave Clark's charges had proved their point — in this year, the Dons own their home mat. Closing out the scoring for the Dons was junior Brett Grover who turned in another typical bulldog-like effort in turning back the Knights' Travis Johnson by the score of 11-8. Grover led from wire to wire in coming up with the victory and in the process added three more team points to the Dons side of the Scoreboard and a 4818 final tally. Coach Clark was delighted with the way his kids performed against a solid Lone Peak team on . the night. "Our kids came out ready to go right from the start tonight and, except for a couple of bumps along the way, against some of the best wrestlers in the entire state, our guys really showed their worth" said Clark, "This was a good win for our program, gives them some confidence heading into the back half of region and on into the region and state tournaments. We saw a few things we'll work on to fix with the kids, but this win was a terrific boost for the team's attitude." The Dons take a few days off for the Christmas break, but get back into action after the first of the year, traveling to West Jordan and Tooele. Their next home match will be against North Sanpete on Jan. 8, 2007, at 7 p.m. Dons vs. Provo: From PROVO • B l grabbed the rebound and threw it back up with the same results. Then with a few seconds to go, a Bulldog knocked it out of bounds. However, the referees allowed the play clock to expire and they went to overtime locked at 42 apiece. Both teams struggled offensively for more than half of the four-minute overtime. Finally, with just under two minutes to go, Provo nailed a charity shot and took a 43^4-2 lead with 40 seconds to go. Spanish Fork then used some clock, working the ball around to find a high percentage shot. With just under 20 seconds to go, Naulu found an open Zac Clayton in three-point land. Money-man caught the ball and launched a crucial trey which rattled around the rim before finding the bottom of the net. With the score tied at 45 all, Provo looked for the win. Their head coach called timeout twice within the last 15 seconds to make sure of the right play call. Then with eight seconds to go, a Bulldog caught and released a 16-foot jumper to take the lead. After a timeout, SF had 3.4 seconds to travel the length of the court. The inbound went to the speedy Naulu who quickly hustled up-court to find Matt Gardner in the comer for a last second buzzer-beater trey. Unfortunately, his shot fell short and Provo escaped with a 41-45 non-region victory. The Bulldogs displayed a solid zone defense but the Dons found success on several three-point shots in thefirstquarter. Devin Nelson also made a brilliant postup move for a sweet turnaround jay to increase the lead. Spanish Fork got a big momentum boost on a great defensive play. A Bulldog had a clean look on a fast-break lay-up but Kevin Roberts came flying in to swat it away just before it kissed the glass which helped the Dons take a 17-12 lead. Spanish Fork played a man defense in this one because their quickness looked to disrupt Provo's ability to set up their half-court offense. Both teams were active around the perimeter and down low. On one play the innovative Naulu dished a clever no-look pass to big man Juan Vergara for an easy two. Vergara, a transfer from Provo, had his best game of the year to date with 11 points, two rebounds and as many blocked shots. At the break, the Dons led 28-24. With four minutes to play in the third, Gardner hit a trey to give SF an eight-point advantage. But two quick turnovers led to a 5-0 run by the Bulldogs which forced a Don time-out. Provo kept creeping back with an active defense that continued to frustrate the Dons. Spanish Fork put up a great fight on the road in a tough place to play. In the end, it came down to one play and the ball bounced Provo's way. Both Gardner (13) and Clayton (9) finished with three treys a piece. Vergara had 11 while Nelson and Roberts both finished with eight boards each. Naulu dished out eight assists. r |
