Show news B4 MONDAY • AUGUST 20 • 2007 90newjobsatUVSC Robert Hayden News writer As UVSC moves towards its transition to UVU next July, many changes around campus are expected. UVSC President William Sederburg recently announced that 90 new full-time positions will be filled during the 2007-08 budget year. Created by Sederburg when the shift to university status was first announced, this goal is one of the nine guiding principles of the University Transition Task Force. The aim in hiring these additional faculty members is to reduce the student-to-faculty ratio and re-align the teaching load. "Our goal is to appoint people with integrity-civically engaged and professionally competent in their field of study," said Cameron Martin, assistant to the president for Institutional Development and Planning and the chair of the University Transition Task Force. "We want to be sure we hire the right people at the right time and for the right reasons, keeping UVSC's focus as a student-centered teaching institution." Traits desired by UVSC for future staff members are concurrent with those exhibited by current faculty members. Applicants must enjoy working with students, excel in the teaching and mentoring of students and fellow professionals, exhibit outstanding scholarship and creativity, and be willing to involve students in scholarly work. Ultimately, these positions will be filled by individuals who support the institution and its dedication to the community. "As we fill these positions, we will recruit individuals who are supportive of building communities of engaged learners," said Sederburg. "We must be cognizant that what Utah Valley University will be tomorrow will largely depend on who we hire today." As many of the new positions will be open to the public, those interested should check postings located on UVSC's employment site, www.uvsc.jobs www.utBhbridalshows.com Sept. 8,200 Provo Marriott Ballroom I 100 W. 100 N. Now some research is showing that this is not necessarily true. A University of Utah study conducted in 2001 shows that driving while talking on a cell phone, even using a hands-free device, causes "inattention blindness." The study, conducted on undergraduate students, consisted of four experiments. These experiments showed that talking on a cell phone impaired the "implicit perceptual memory" of the driver. This is where the brain receives and stores information that is not always stored consciously. The test subjects' brains were given the same information as the control subjects but their brains were too engrossed in conversation to process it. "Even though your eyes are looking right at something, when you are on the cell phone, you are not as likely to see it," University of Utah professor of psychology David Strayer explained. The study also concluded that cell phone usage can impair a driver's ability to react to sudden events, like a child running into the road. This study, along with other similar studies, suggests that the use of cell phones may quadruple the risk of be- ing involved in a traffic accident. Although about half of the test subjects noted that they had seen someone driving badly while using a cell phone, they "rarely if ever thought that their own driving was impaired when they used the cell phone." The researchers sa>t that this is a consequence of using a cell phone and not being aware of your own "impaired driving behavior." While cell phone usage while driving on campus is not banned, you can be pulled over and ticketed for distracted or unsafe driving. This includes swerving, not obeying traffic signs, and following too close. Campus police officers recommend pulling over to take a call and returning to the road once you can drive safely again.
