Rest assured, our library carries a vast variety that's literally too extensive to be fully described in this article, including fairly new releases. Each genre seems to be covered, from horror movies to musicals and fantasy films to documentaries, the library has it. In addition, if you enjoy foreign films, this is the place. If I counted correctly, there are films from 33 different countries, including Australia, India, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Mexico and 26 others. Are you a film history buff? You can find a great selection of early, silent motion pictures and their trailblazing • pioneers, such as D.W. Griffith, Thomas Edison, Georges Melies, and the Lumiere brothers, just to name a few. I've found historic films at our library that date back as far as 1901. But I suspect most students are inclined to look for more modern movies by directors like Scorsese or Spielberg. That's fine, but don't forget to check out the magnificent, works of directors like Ingmar Bergman and Werner Herzog. It's easy to find the films you're looking for: Go to uvsc.edu and click on the "Library" link. Next click on "Books & Media" and then "UVSC Library Catalog." Click on the search link "Advanced" and type in the name of the movie you'd like to find in the "Video Title Browse" field. Hit search and use the call number to find your video and its availability status. Some films are held at the Reserve Desk on the third floor. This means that they are being studied by a film class during that semester and can only be viewed in the library. If your video selection isn't on reserve, you can borrow it for three days. Now, if you're truly serious about movies, and you can't find a particular film at the UV library, then let me tell you the best-kept secret in Utah Valley: the Orem Library. Its video collection is nothing short of phenomenal (not hyperbole), and each rental costs $1. The only movie that I know of that the Orem library doesn't carry is Peckinpah's Bring Me The Head. Of Alfredo Garcia (1974). In the words of Osgood Fielding in Some Like It Hot (1959), "nobody's perfect." And one more thing for you movie lovers, be sure to read "Getting more at the movies than just popcorn" on A5. |
