Show r college times on rr ii pe nn tt aa tt ii no nn ^^—J i s s u e i <; <; n p The Independent Student Voice of Utah Valley State MONDAY • AUGUST 20 • 2007 VOLUME XXXVII-NO. 1 NETXNEWS.NET A mission to fight Exciting changes Letter from the president Letter from the student body president Dear students, Thanks for joining us at UVSC for the 2007-08 school year. I am pleased you have decided to advance yourself by attending UVSC. It is a historic year for UVSC. In July 2008, we will become Utah Valley University. During the next few months we will be preparing to make this change by adding new programs, and hiring additional faculty and academic advisers. The board of regents will be considering our proposal to add masters' degrees to our degree offerings. Our new library will open next summer. While we are excited about the changes before us, the most important thing we have to do is help you achieve your dreams. We work hard at providing exemplary services and opportunities for our students. However, you will get out of college only the amount that you put into your college experience. Thus, I urge you to become fully engaged in your learning and college life. Join a club, attend athletic or arts events, volunteer, or study with friends. I look forward to meeting you around campus. Please stop me in the halls and say hello. Or, send me an email at Sederburg@uvsc. edu I try to respond to every e-mail I receive. Thanks for being part of UVSC at an exciting time in our history. Bill Sederburg President SHOW TIME! Jason Pyles Ufe writer I have a secret about UVSC that I'm reluctant to publish in this newspaper. Indeed, it's the school's bestkept secret: free movie rentals. It's true. UVSC's library (or the Losee Learning Resource Center) has a selection of nearly 12,000 DVD and VHS films located on the fourth floor. All you need to check them out is your UV identification card, which sure beats paying $27 for a movie rental at the video store. (Hyperbole) Or, if you deserve a cinematic break during your school day, you're welcome to use the screening room, LC 413, to watch a movie on site. Headphones can be checked out from the fourth-floor circulation desk. You may wonder about See MOVIE-A4 Dear students of "Utah Valley State College," soon to be "Utah Valley University": Getting the most out of UVLink ' • - ' * • - . . . . . . . Whether a UVSC student wants to sign up for classes, see a report card, or double-check a tuition statement, chances are, he or she will need to use UVLink to do it. Justin Hitter News writer Necessities such as registration, viewing final grades and teacher-student correspondence require that students know how to navigate the Web site. "It's pretty tough to do any business at UVSC without UVLink," said Dave Tobler, director of UVSC's Center for Student Computing. 'The quicker students get familiar with it, the easier their life will be on campus." To help new students become familiar with UVLink, and to help all students better utilize the site, the College Times provides the following hints and tips. The UVLink home page The UVLink home page includes an inbox for LinkMail, the school's e-mail service as well as and UVAnnounce, which keeps students informed on campus activities and other opportunities at UVSC. The Online Services menu below LinkMail pro^iae? links that allow students to $OT»ly for scholarships and financial alp; 'make online tuition payments; cfiange personal information; register for, or add or drop, classes; and access holds, transcripts and grades. Tabs at the top of the page give students access to a campus calendar, help and support, student registration and financial information, Blackboard and a customized page. MyUVSC, a box to the left of Online Services, allows students to send anonymous suggestions or success stories to President Sederburg. Campus directories, including faculty and employee directories, can be found in the bottom-left corner of the page. UVSC does not have an online student directory. What to do when UVLink is down From time to time, students are unable to access UVLink. Some down-times are caused by too many users trying to access the site at one time, while others are scheduled to allow time for site maintenance. Registration, student records and tuition payments, Blackboard and LinkMail can all be accessed by clicking on their respective links at the bottom of the UVLink login page, allowing students to conduct the business they need to when UVLink is offline. Blackboard replaces WebCT Returning students will notice one major change with the Web site this semester. WebCT, which provides students with course information, has been replaced by Blackboard Learning System. Blackboard will perform the same function as WebCT, and can be accessed by clicking on the old WeJjCT tab at the top of the page. |< Student page By clicking on the Student Tab at the top of the home page, students can access the student page. It offers registration and student financial services, some of which can be accessed from the home page. Helpful features on the student page that are not on the home page include an academic calendar; a course catalog; a classroom testing center link which allows students to check test scores, and BookMatch, UVSC's online bookstore. Using LinkMail UVLink offers LinkMail as a way for faculty and students to communicate' with one other. UVSC also informs its student body of upcoming deadlines, events and opportunities via LinkMail. The LinkMail inbox is on the UVLink homepage. To open the entire application, students can click on the e-mail button in the top-right comer of the home page. Students can set LinkMail to forward all messages to their personal e-mail accounts by selecting the Options tab in their email boxes, clicking on the Auto Forward button, and typing in their personal email addresses. All messages sent to LinkMail will be forwarded to the students' personal accounts. Page navigation using the Back to Tab button Some pages on UVLink, including the ones linked to Online Services, do not allow the user to return to the previous tab by using the Web browser's Back button. Clicking on the Back to Tab button in the top-left corner of the page directs the user to the previous tab. For additional help with UVLink, students may submit an online technical support request, found on the Help/Support page. For problems with admissions, financial aid, registration, or grades, students may call the Student Services Call Center at 801-863-INFO. Those with computer or other technical problems should call the I.T. Help Desk at 801-863-8888, or e-mail the Help Desk at helpdesk@uvsc.edu What an exciting year to be back in school and be a part of history. Never before have students of this great institution traveled this road of success and distinction. UVU is sure to become one of the premier institutions in the state. So much hard work and dedication have gone toward transforming this campus into a model institution for this state and even nation wide. Students should feel proud to be Wolverines and to witness the transformation of a wonderful college to an incredible university. We don't want students just to watch, however. With so much change happening around us, I encourage students to get involved and be hands-on in this transformation. So many opportunities await you, opportunities that you may have never seen before. This is a time to leave your thumb print in history on this campus and jumpstart your future. You have the chance of a lifetime to be an engaged learner by actively participating in your education. You can make of it what you wish; the sky is the limit. College should be a time of great exploration and learning, not just the materials in the class room, but within yourselves, also. Reach out to find yourself, try new things, and be an active participant in student activities. Join clubs, or start your own if you wish, and do everything you can to make the most of your college experience. You will only have this opportunity once in a lifetime. Harrison E. Salisbury said, 'There is no shortcut to life. To the end of our days, life is a lesson imperfectly learned." Don't be afraid to take yourself out of your comfort zone; only learning and growth can come from it. With a mission to fight for every student, I want all of you to know that I am here for you. Student government, along with many other leadership groups on campus is committed to you the student. We want to do all in our power to make your individual voices heard. Your issues are our issues, and your aspirations are our aspirations. Please contact me or any other student government representative by email or by stopping by SC105. We are always available and willing to help you with anything you need. Have a great year and great success. Sincerely, Kris Coles Student Body President |
