The Department of Special Education is nationally recognized for its excellent programs, quality faculty, and personal commitment to its teacher candidates. The Department was recently ranked 18th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. rp Due to the critical shortage of special 4 ,1 education teachers throughout Utah and around the country, a teaching license and degree in special education is a highly marketable. • 4.ts` The Utah baseball team ended last season with a bitter taste in its mouth. After climbing to first place in the Mountain West Conference early in the season, the Utes went on a 7-18 tailspin that resulted in an early exit from the conference tournament. But that won't deter this year's Utes from maintaining lofty expectations for the upcoming season. "We're going to have very high expectations like we did last year," said returning All-American catcher and designated hitter C.J. Cron. "I feel we had a really good team (last year), we just never clicked and one of our goals for (this year) is to get the most out of our guys." Cron, shortstop Michael Beltran and catcher Jo Jo Sharrar will once again anchor the offense. After hitting .431 with 20 homers, Cron was named the conference player of the year, BASKETBALL continued from Page D4 ' SPEC STAFF WRITER "TATICZI For more information on degree requirements and a career in special education, contact: Patty Davis, Student Advisor, Dept. of Special Education, 801-581-4764 or patty.davis@utah.edu . "They have all played considerable minutes, so we do have a core group of experienced guys coming back, and we need to obviously get some production from the new guys but it's those core guys that have to lead us and have to step up and establish what is expected in this program and build from there." and earned first-team All-American honors from several national publications. "I just have to keep working hard," Cron said. "I've got to keep trying to get better." Beltran was the team's second-leading hitter last year at .338, but he missed several games in the middle of the season, which contributed to a midseason offensive swoon. Sharrar earned more playing time as the season went on because of his strong performance both behind the plate and in the batter's box, where he hit .316. Left-hander Rick Anton is the team's top returning pitcher. Anton went 7-3 last year and had an ERA in the low fours most of the year before it ballooned to 5.13 at the end of the season. Sophomore right-handers Zach Adams and Brock Duke will be expected to pick up much of the slack left by the graduation of last year's Friday-night starter Jordan Whatcott, who signed a contract with See BASEBALL Page Dll For leadership, Boylen will especially look to Watkins, the only senior on the team. The 6-foot, 8-inch forward said he is willing to do whatever it takes. "I am going to do whatever Coach asks of me," Watkins said. "Whatever it takes in order for us to win is what I am going to do." Watkins, a junior-college transfer last season, averaged 9.2 points and 4.1 rebounds in just more than 23 minutes per contest. Watkins will get his chance to lead the Utes starting Nov. 5, when Utah begins its 20102011 campaign with an exhibition game against Adams State in the Huntsman Center. Regular-season play tips off with a home game Nov. 12 against Grand Canyon University. Utah's conference schedule will be released in August. c.godfrey@ chronicle.utah.edu New Runnin' Utes Name Height Weight Position Year 21 Will Clyburn 10 Antonio DiMaria 25 Josh Fuller 3 Preston Guiot 2 Chris Kupets 11 Dominique Lee 41 Neal Monson 20 J.J.
