Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE August 2010 C3 Late-night possibilities for the underage W elcome to the U. As you start to accumulate time in classrooms up here on the hill, inevitably you will get to a point when you will need to blow off some steam. Enter the guide to under-21 fun in Salt Lake City. This guide is designed to help students who are under 21 years old find places that are either open late or cater to that age group. The legendary Pie Pizzeria, located near campus, is a great place to grab some quality grub after midnight and hang with fellow students. Up at 4 a.m. on a Saturday night with a killer munchies attack? The Bayleaf Café on 159 South and Main St. is open all weekend long. ALEX NORSHIRVAN Junior, Mass Communication Starting Friday night and stretching until Sunday afternoon, the Bayleaf stays open continuously. I suggest trying the Chicken and Waffles and drenching them with hot sauce and maple syrup. It's a dish that works at any time of the day. Another popular late-night eatery open to the under-21 population is Dee's diner in Sugarhouse, located at 700 East and 2100 South. Often referred to as "Freaky Dee's" because of the crowd it can attract at the witching hour, Dee's is a great place to bring a group of friends to hang out after midnight. Mo's Neighborhood Grill, located on 385 South and West Temple, is the place to go for the beatnik crowd. It features an open-mic night and a poetry slam night. Live performers play music all the time, and the food is pretty cheap. If you are out late, but aren't looking for food, there are some U-21 club options for you out there. The most popular late night club option is Area 51, which is located on 500 South and 400 West. Area 51 allows both underage and legal patrons through its doors. A decade ago, Area 51 was dominated by black nail polish and eyeliner. Nowadays, the club has acquired a more mainstream appeal thanks to '8os night on Thursdays and pop music on the weekends on their upstairs dance floor. The downstairs dance floor caters to the goth crowd, while upstairs draws everything from preppy kids to 4o-somethings. Club Sound is another underage club that occasionally features concerts. It's not the best club in town, but beggars—those under 21—can't be choosers. Club Sound is located at 579 West and 200 South. Studio 600 is also open to the underage. However, there is no smoking or drinking allowed on the premises, even if you are of age, and the dress code leaves a bit to be desired. Studio 600 is located at 26 East and 600 South. As you get to know the U and Salt Lake City, you will find more places that are fun and enjoyable no matter what your age is. This is one of the perks of going to the U; you live in a major city, something those who live in Provo wish they could say. So enjoy this time, because once you are done with school, these opportunities become few and far between. letters@chronicle.utah.edu Even hamsters write letters to the editor. • • • A DAY YOU'LL •• II • OR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
