Many Americans are doing their part to help with the cleanup by donating their personal hair clippings and excess pet fur. Loose hair clippings are bundled and stuffed into nylons that are tied together to make booms, which are used to soak up the oil spills. "I have pretty short hair, but I would donate a few inches for the cause," said Kelsey Wilker, an undecided sophomore. "It is atrocious what has happened, and the lack of action and effort being put forth by the parties involved. I would do my part in hope that (others) would do a little, so collectively as a society it would make a noticeable impact on the dire situation at hand." Not everyone is willing to give up his or her hair as easily as Wilker. "To be honest, I probably wouldn't," said Suzy Solyom, a junior in mass communication. "How would I know if my hair would VEHICLES continued from Page A6 NO MATTER WHO In Salt Lake City, planners are "very much committed to being pedestrian-oriented," said Wilf Sommerkorn, planning director for Salt Lake City. The city's transportation plan gives emphasis to pe- destrians, bikes and transit. This emphasis creates a "need to be proactive in planning the amenities for those walking and using transit," he said. Utah communities such as Daybreak, the City Creek center, and some areas of Sugar House exemplify some principles that smart-growth planners have been suggest- HURRICANES WHERE YOU COME FROM, OR WHEREYOUWANTri GO AT THE I LI, truly make it to the oil spill, or just get put in a bag and thrown in the nearest Dumpster? I'd rather go shave a poodle than my own head." Having moved back to Europe for the summer, Amanda Gill, a sophomore in accounting, said she does not appreciate driving past the numerous BP gas pumps located all over England. "Although I know many other oil companies that have the same malpractices as BP, I absolutely hate BP the most," Gill said. "They are hypocrites." At the beginning of July, BP started working to secure a cap to seal the massive leak on the rig in the gulf. Salt Lake cleanup crews began a final 3o-day remediation of the Red Butte Canyon spill July 20. Using heavy equipment, workers will remove oiled dirt and replace it with clean dirt, according to the Salt Lake City website. "Our desire is to finish the cleanup and to restore the stream and its environments. We will make every effort to make sure that this is done," Becker said. "For the most part, especially before they form an eye, it's just kind of a motley collection of rainstorms and maybe thunderstorms," Zipser said. "That's one of the things we'll be looking at: What is the distribution of the rainstorms around the possibly forming storm." Once the storm becomes named—meaning the winds of the storm have reached more than 75 mph—the focus switches from gen- ing. These developments mix vocational, living and shopping spaces with accessible streets and transit. The researchers hope this study provides muchneeded quantifiable data so planners, policymakers and others have appropriate measures to use in their planning. m.colson@chronicle.utah. esis to intensification, Zipser said. Scientists will look into what causes hurricanes to rapidly intensify, like what Hurricane Katrina did in 2005, intensifying from a Category to a Category 5 hurricane as it crossed the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical storms are one of the most interesting things that happen in the atmosphere, Zipser said. "It's an absolutely fascinating problem that Mother Nature has thrown at us," Zipser said. Scientists have been working on this problem for the past 55 years, and "until we answer those questions, it's one of those questions that bug the scientists," he said. d.rafferty@ chronicle.utah.edu HAS SOMETHING INMAZING WAITING FOR www. kuteradio. corn UTV Ch. 99 :: 1620 AM STOP BY ASUU IN THE STUDENT UNION WITH THIS AD AND PICK UP YOUR 2010 ASUU T-SHIRT!
