Show DAILY August 2010 UTAH CHRONICLE B5 Burt's Tiki Lounge an eccentric venue for diverse genres Mitch Sears STAFF WRITER One of Salt Lake City's last true "dive bars," Burt's Tiki Lounge, features a laid-back atmosphere for people looking to enjoy live music without the conventional bar or club scene. The Tiki Lounge has cheap drink specials and music every night for a reasonable cover charge. The venue is full of character, demonstrated by its eccentric furnishings. Its walls and ceiling are covered with posters from all of the bands that have played there. The bar is littered with kitschy knick-knacks that are sure to spark a conversation. Of particular note are the restrooms that have every surface covered in stickers from bands throughout the ages. "We came to this place, and it's like the oasis," said Michael Goetz, drummer for the Quick & Easy Boys who played at the venue in June. "It's a nice punk bar that's good and rough." "If you're a Salt Lake City punk band and haven't played at Burt's, you haven't done your time," said the doorman known to patrons merely as "Sasquatch." But Burt's isn't just a punk bar. The types of bands that come to the lounge are as varied and unique as the venue itself. Burt's brings in everything from funk to alternative-folk, and punk to classic rock. Its main draw is up-and-coming local bands. In July, the venue will feature bands such as The Velvetones, The Futurists and The Utah County Swillers. Burt's Tiki Lounge is located at 726 S. State Street and is open weekdays from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. and weekends 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. For more information on upcoming bands, visit their website at www.myspace.com/burtstikilounge or for events sent straight to your inbox, join the venue's Facebook page, keyword "Burt's Tiki Lounge."
