Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE B6 August 2010 Indie soundtrack features tranquil beach music "Machines" being a prime example because of its similarity to a Beach Boys song. The acoustic guitar is prominently featured in much of the album in a way that identifies with the setting of the movie. The lyrics to many of the songs embody the journey of the main character, and his ties to the past, with Jeff retracing Yvon's path to Patagonia. This is most evident in the cover of Neil Young's "Journey Through the Past" by James Mercer, and Ugly Casanova's "Wave Goodbye" and "Maybe We're Lost." The album prominently features Isaac Brock, known from Modest Mouse, with his band Ugly Casanova. Fans of Modest Mouse will recognize Brock's unique voice and his trademark banjo. The album also includes tracks by popular alternative-rock musicians Mason Jennings, James Mercer and Jack Johnson. The album is available on iTunes, with all tracks available for individual purchase. The film is also available on Netflix. Mohammad Allam ARTS EDITOR In an expertly crafted collaboration of musicians, the "i8o° South" movie soundtrack is full of captivating alternative-rock songs, perfect for the indie film it accompanies. "i8o° South" is a movie about a man, Jeff Johnson, on a journey following the footsteps of his hero Yvon Choinard, who in 1968 undertook an epic adventure to the untouched wilderness of Patagonia, Chile. Jeff gets shipwrecked and faces many unexpected challenges, such as surfing the longest wave he has ever seen and facing an environmental challenge that threatens the land he traveled so far to witness. The album is a strong collection of alternative-rock songs, which expertly convey the ocean setting, as well as the spiritual journey the main character undertakes. The song "Mountains of Storms" features a distinct sound of tranquility that is wellsuited for the ocean scenes it supplements. Many of the tracks feature a surfer-type, beachmusic sound, with the track ROM OF THE USELESS ORIGINAL Music COMPOSED By UGLY CASANOVA AND JAMES MERCER ALSO FEATURING SONGS FROM MASON ENNINGS JACK JOHNSON,.
