Show 20 November 2009 THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE / / Rivalry Guide BYU continued from Page 4 season's blowout. After last year's 48-24 loss to the Utes, in which Max Hall threw five interceptions, BYU's offense will have to be on point to avoid losing at LaVell Edwards stadium for the third time this season. BYU's two losses have come at the hands of 6-5 Florida State and 11-0 TCU. In contrast, Utah's two losses of the season came on the road, to Oregon and TCU. Despite losing at home twice this season, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall knows it isn't necessary to emphasize the importance of getting wins at home to his team. "I think they certainly know where I stand; they've all been part of the past couple of seasons and they know what emphasis we have," Mendenhall said. "We have played two pretty good teams. Thefirstone we turned it over far too many times and didn't play a very good football game. The second one, I think on that night, a better team beat us. And so we'll see how wefinish, but I don't think it will be a matter of mo- dhweou:ci give the Cougar defense all they can handle and more. "We've got to be able to run the ball and control the ball," Whittingham said. Wide is right behind Unga in rushing yards, with an average of 83.5 yards per game. Wide stepped in as the Utes go-to running back when senior Matt Asiata went down during the Louisville game and has been a crucial part of the Utes' success this season. BYU is second in the conference in rushing defense, holding teams to an average of 103 rushing yards per game—just 20 more yards than Wide's average. Reed is leading the conference in receiving yards with an average of 93 per game and more than 14 per catch. The only uncertainty in the Utah offense is true freshman quarterback Jordan Wynn. BYU comes into the annual rivalry game off wins over New Mexico and Air Force and is looking to get its second consecutive win over Utah in Provo. Utah is coming off a blowout 38-7 win over San Diego State in its last home game of the season. tivation, enthusiasm or intent." TCU held the Cougars to just 188 passing yards on the game, 100 yards less than Hall's per-game average. Hall could also face trouble from the Utes, as their pass defense ranks third in the conference, allowing opponents only 173 yards per game. BYU leads the conference in passing offense, averaging just over 300 yards per game. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said putting pressure on Hall will be one of the keys to being successful against the Cougars. "They are a very good throw team, they are every single year and you've got to be able to play pass defense," Whittingham said. "You've got to be able to put pressure on them, you've got to get pressure on the quarterback. When you don't get pressure on any quarterback, they're effective, and you've got to keep them out of their rhythm." Helping counteract BYU's aerial attack is junior running back Harvey Unga, who is leading the conference with an average of 92.6 rushing yards per game. On the other side of the ball, Utah's dynamic duo of running back Eddie Wide and wide receiver David Reed are prepared to .:aior Uv idiot . eara on the Lvvi|:€frviei?'[ iw-eli' JLLJJ tvA/eatiemaniat^fc i' j - | B ^ l ^ r i ' - ^ \m:|erl\r ho aid o n v\e?t a twltter.com/thechrony twittertwg tweet a littl ' i t - ' i i nv-r--"' • viz heard q p.fieldsted@ chronicle.utah.edu •> RESORT | SIDECOUj ;^J COUNTRY Now more than ever, today's ski equipment blurs the lines between riding resort and shredding the baekeountry, Does your setup take you beyond the ropes and back without question?
