Show November 2009 THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE / / Rivalry Guide Wynn, Hall to face off with opposite perspectives Bryan Chouinard ASST. SPORTS EDITOR You can ask any player, fan or coach who has been involved in the Holy War, and they'll tell you there are stark differences between the two schools, including the football programs. A major difference this year, as opposed to years in the recent past, is the quarterback matchup. Although Utah true freshman Jordan Wynn and BYU's Max Hall are both quarterbacks capable of putting up big numbers and stretching defenses with their throwing abilities, Hall has one clear advantage over Wynn—Hall is a senior and is preparing to start his third rivalry game. Hall has started not only every game for BYU this season but also every game for the past three seasons. Since taking over the starting role from former BYU quarterback John Beck as a sophomore, Hall has been one of the most prolific passers in Mountain West Conference history. Hall started his college career at Arizona State, where he redshirted as a true freshman. After his freshman season, Hall transferred to * BYU, but the decision required him to sit out another season because of the NCAA's transfer policy. As a sophomore, Hall threw for more than 3,000 yards, 26 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions on his way to leading the Cougars to a share of the MWC title and a Las Vegas Bowl berth. Hall again showed his ability to air out the ball in 2008 when he threw for 3,957 yards, racked up 35 touchdowns and threw 14 interceptions, despite falling to in-conference rivals Utah and TCU. Now in his senior season, Hall has continued the trend of racking up big numbers through the air, but it has come with a price. For the third year in a row, Hall has thrown at least 12 interceptions, which puts him near the top in the nation in that category. Something new for Hall and the Cougars in 2009 is the fact that they have been beaten at home—twice— which is something Hall didn't experience his first two years as a starter. "We've lost a few games at home this year, which is uncharacteristic of us," Hall said. "So we want to make sure we finish the season right." In order to finish the season "right," Hall and the Cougars will have to avoid a loss in the final home game of Hall's career against Wynn and the Utes. Wynn, who is only three starts into his college career, graduated early last year from Oceanside High School in California in order to be in Salt Lake City last spring to partake in spring ball. Despite Wynn's 2-1 record as a starter, the move seems to have paid off, according to the coaches. Wynn, in the limited playing time he has seen this year, has shown potential of growing into a big-time passing quarterback. "Jordan (Wynn) does not hesitate to throw the ball down the field," said head coach Kyle Whittingham. "He's very comfortable throwing the deep ball and has shown the ability to throw the ball down the field." See COMPARISON Page 14 You Always Wanted To Go Platinum. It suits you well.
