What is it about Happy Valley that turns valiant high school athletes into gridiron generals? It has become a new certainty of life, alongside death and taxes: There is always a great BYU quarterback right around the corner. The Davey O'Brien Award is handed out annually to the nation's best quarterback. It is an award BYU quarterbacks have claimed four times, with one runner-up. College football fans need no explanation of the magnitude the Heisman Trophy carries; it is the most coveted award in all of college sports. It's also an award that former BYU quarterback Ty Detmer added to his trophy collection in 1990. But what is the formula for BYU's success? Utah defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake, a former BYU fullback, had no problem with that question, reeling off names of the BYU greats. "Look at all the great QBs they have had there: McMahon, Wilson, Young, Detmer," he said. "They have had great success there, and if you are a good quarterback, why wouldn't you want to go to that kind of system where they air it out?" According to collegefootballnews.com, BYU is ranked as the fifth-best college quarterback school of all time, trailing only Oklahoma, Miami, USC and Florida. Gi£ford Nielsen, Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon and Steve Young all grace the College Football Hall of Fame with pictures and statistics of their great careers as Cougars, and many other BYU quarterbacks of the past are primed to join them.
