Show Page 2-Wasatch Canyon Reporter, 21 December 1994- 10 January 1995 ORIALFs EDI Where | grew up one of the true joys was standing on the edge of my field inhaling great bushels full of clean Vermont air, while using all of outdoors nyons Ski Reports: Car e last minute we can — we put this fishiwrapper to bed. Use this as a guide not a betting table or bible. e18 as my restroom. The air in Vermont was so clean, that it contained a tangible calla sharpness, and it wasn’t a watershed area. Two weeks ago while driving out of the canyons with a friend of mine, his nose started spontaneously bleeding. As the rivulets of his blood dripped, and he started plugging frantically with soiled -Mcdonald’s napkins, he explained to me that every time the inversion got really bad, and the valley is filled with dense smog, his nose made like the Nile in spring. x ? | was agog, not being used to big city pollution. The inversion stuck Alta‘s General Information Number with us for several days; the stink and tangy flavor was thick enough to make _ my taste buds recoil. Every one| spoke to seemed inordinately casual about the whole thing. | could barely see my neighbors house as he wheezed “how 801-742-3333 Number of lifts operating Base Depth mid mountain about this inversion, har har har.” For two weeks, | have been in a state of shock. | am amazed that everyone in Utah can so blithely go about their business while the air quality is so miserable. — | Cost of an all area adult lift Ticket $25 Dercentage of area open 99% Half Day: So far while working in the newspaper business, | have been 8 of 8 80° called everything from rat bastard to pro development, and some even going so far'as saying | am the resorts sycophant. | choose only the label of air quality environmentalist. | would happily give up my toxin spewing automobile in exchange for one that is slower, more expensive, and runs clean. It is beyond me how anyone can live in the Salt Lake Valley and vote for any politician who isn’t hopping mad about the air quality. After the Persian 9:15 to 1:00 or 1:00 to 4:00 Brighton Re SO RT Gulf war | was sure that the speaker for the Rotarians that we were calling Commander in Chief would take some initiative. The monster clouds from the burning oil wells should have been some kind of signal from Jah that maybe crude oil isn’t the way to go. The hundreds of thousands who died horribly should have been a sign that black gold was getting too expensive. Certainly the fifty billion large that we and our allies shelled out for that little scuffle could have been spent more wisely on alternative energies. But no, after the war, our little fighter pilot in Washington determined that a wise, sensible, and well _ 6 of7 73 | $28 Half Day Ticket $25 Texas oil naturally. | can’t affect national policy, but | can have my little say in this area. Let’s work towards policies that do not harm the air that we breath. Hydrogen, Natural Gas, and solar are all viable energy sources with a considerably smaller impact on our air quality. Read Dan Caruso’s article in this newspaper, and after digesting it, consider the possibility of a light rail system in the Canyon’'s. Isn’t it time we started a dialog on the ways that we can keep our canyon’s healthy forever. With Light rail in the Canyon’s we could charge those that are determined to drive up to the resorts twenty bucks per car. Use this money to help cover the costs of light rail. Allow the resorts to develop the acreage that is currently used as parking lots. There is no reason that saving the environment has to be a losing proposition for business. lf we ever do get the air clean, | will miss the beautiful sunsets. snowbird WV Snowbird's General Information Number 801-742-2222 Number of lifts operating 1/2 Day Ticket 9, $33 Solitude | Town Administrator’s Report Treasurer’s Report Marshal’s Report Consideration of ordinence #1995-0-1 - an ordinence establishing a procedure for the review of actions by the town that may have -consitiutional issues : of Ski Branch, Jan Striefel and Scott reappointment of Consideration Consideration of appointment of Clyde NAsh to the Town of Alta Board of adjustments Public hearing: Review of Proposed Town of Alta culinary water system improvements- Sunrise Engineering and Town of Alta: Staff 10.
