Show THE CHURCH IN ACTION STERLING, III.: Radio Station Features LDS Elder Around The World LOUISIANA: Speech Class Formed At Prison NORWAY in Sterling, HI. Radio station WJUM-Frecently featured three missionaries on its program night conversation Sunday "Drumbeats. Those participating were Elder J. Lay-to- n from Thatcher, Arizona ; Elder C. Larsen from Salt Lake City, Utah; Rev. Diaries Chakour, moderator of the program and Elder J. Stoddard from Brigham Dty, Utah. The Elders presented some aspects of the Mormon religion, after which the program was opined to questions. The ensuing conversations between the Elders and those calling in their questions turned out to be so lively that the program continued one hour past its normal air time and was continued the following Sunday with similar results. Ronald W. Browning, a returned missionary, and presently a stake missionary and adult Sunday School teacher, is an instructor of speech at Louisiana State University at Eunice, Louisiana. Not only is he a dedicated, imaginative, and popular teacher, but, he is involved in a special community activity. He has initiated a weekly speech class at a local prison in DeQuincy, La. This class is held at Louisiana Correctional Industrial School. This prison is mainly for first offenders, therefore many of the fellows are young. Mr. Browning ha- - reported enthusiastic responses with some fairly creative speeches. BEREA, KY.: Mohawk SALT LAKE CITY: Wells Chief Visits Maoris Stake Has Record Month Philip R. Cook, former Mohawk chief and a member of the Richmond Group in the East Central States Mission has recently returned from a trip to New Zealand to compare the problems of the American Indians and the Maori groups of New Zealand. He was participating in an exchange program called Dtizens Crusade Against Poverty, sponsored by the Ford Foundation. While in New Zealand with nine other American Indian leaders, Mr. Cook visited 25 Maori tribal meeting houses. He also spent several days in the homes of Maori families which gave him an opportunity to get to know the Maori people. He said he felt a strong spirit of kinship between the two groups. Following the trip to New Zealand the American Indians spent two days evaluating what they had learned. A Plaque For Norway A plaque sponsored by Daughters of Utah Pioneers commemorating opening of Norwegian Mission is admired by John Geigle, Erling Magnesen and Mrs. Israel H. Fackrell. It will be displayed at Osterrisoeer, Norway, site of the first branch and where earliest converts were baptized. 28-d- LAIE: Freshman Wins CCH Crown Trudy Andersen freshman from Laie, won the Miss CCH title recently at The Church College of Hawaii. She is the daughter of Bishop and Mrs. Dwayne N. Andersen of Laie and a 1968 graduate of Kahuku High School. Trudy majors in physical education at the college. As Miss CCH, she will represent the college in the Miss Hawaii contest. The winner of the Hawaii regional title will go to the Miss America competition. were Irene The queens runners-uHardy, freshman from Tooele, Utah, and Harriet Golden Pau, senior from Kaneohe, Hawaii. They were selected from a field of eight coeds who vied for the Miss CCH crown. Last years Miss CCH was Naomi Kahoi-luHawaiian beauty from Hilo. p a, Trudy Andersen physical ed. major selves to 500 endowments during March. A badge with "500 in large numerals was presented to each member who attended an endowment session. There were 121 members participating. "The good thing about our campaign, said Bishop Winegar, was we got many members who held recommends but were not using them to go to the temple. We also got some worthy members to come in to get their recommends to join us in the campaign. During March the ward members performed 681 endowments, and Wells Stake had a total of 2,033. Although this may not be a record for a ward in a month, its the kind of activity we like to see, an official of the Salt Lake Temple said. WASHINGTON: Named Boss Of The Year ' Gayle G. Hall, manager of State Farm Insurance agency, was named the Lake-woo- d Jaycees "Boss of the Year recently. He was chosen by the clubs executive committee from among 34 nominees. "Mr. Hall is motivated by what is right and what is fair for all concerned and conducts his life and business toward that goal, said Dean Hiner in his nomination of Mr. Hall. Mr. Hall is a native of Idaho and a graduate of Pocatello High School and attended Idaho State University. He is superintendent of the YMMIA in Fourth Ward, Puget Sound Stake, Tacoma, Wash. John H. EDMONTON: Gleaner Cited As Best Actress DALLAS: Counselor Heads Dentists Group PROVO: 58 Awards Given At Ceremony In one of the largest ceremonies of its kind held by a stake, 58 Master and Golden Gleaner awards were presented at a banquet of the Brigham Young University Sixth Stake recently. n Present to extend congratulations for the outstanding achievement were Mrs. Florence S. Jacobsen, general president of the Young Womens Mutual Improvement Association, and G. Carlos Smith Jr., general superintendent of the Young Mens Mutual Improvement Association. There are 10 stakes on BYU campus, and the Sixth Stake, with Dr. Wayne B. Hales as president, is made up of married students. An Honorary Master award was presented to Alma King and an honorary Golden Gleaner award to Mrs. King. Mr. King is bishop of the 60th Ward on campus and a member of the student personnel staff. Supt. Smith praised the 58 recipients and urged them to set standards for the world to emulate. Mrs. Jacobsen said she was pleased to see so many couples receving the awards and urged them to stay close to the Church all of their lives. n . . . If theres one thing the members of Wilson Ward in Wells Stake in Salt Lake City like to do its temple work. Diming the latter part of February, Bishop Glen S. Winegar got the ball rolling by asking ward members to pledge them- Dianne Fisher, Pres. John Haixrid Mullen, Jr., first counselor to President Harold E. Turley, El Paso Stake, was installed as president of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry, recently, in Dallas, after serving as vice president and secretary. Pres. Mullen was president of the El Paso District Dental Society in 1960-6He was one of the founders of the El Paso Dental Study Dub, serving as president and also program coordinator. He is a member of the American Academy of Practice Management, a member of the Northwestern Century Dub and life member of the Xi Psi Phi dental fraternity. 1. 18, a Gleaner in the Sec- ond Ward, Edmonton Stake, has added to her accomplishments the "Best Actress Award in the Province of Alberta High School Drama Festival. An honor student at Bonnie Doon Composite High School, she has been chosen valedictorian of the 1969 graduating class. She is winner, of the Fine Arts scholarship and attended the Banff School of Fine Arte in 1968. She is the daughter of Holly and Glenn Fisher, former president of the Western Canadian Mission and the South African Mission.
