Jensen Its Christmas again! - the hustle and bustle, planning the excitement, the odor of for those the we love; carols, surprises Christmas goodies drifting through the house, mingling with the fresh scent of the Christmas tree - all the little things that make Christmas so memorable. But I sometimes feel that our celebration of Christmas has drifted too far from what it was originally intended to be. Recently we asked some students at NSMS to write us some Christmas stories so that we could use them in our Christmas issue. The kids did - and some of their offerings are given elsewhere in this paper. However, we were flabergasted by a great number of the stories we received. Following are a few exceprts from their presentations: ....Santa went out to hitch up Rudolph and found him dead with a four inch hole in his side Later, in the sleigh full of toys Santa felt a sudden pain in his chest. His sled and all of his deer fell to the ground and went splat! ! ....Santa pulled out of the local bar in Hawaii and was dead drunk....He hid out in a cafe where he died from drinking too much. The police found his body and said he froze to death so all the kids wouldnt know that he was a drunk. ...Mrs. Claus with her 12 gauge double barrel shotgun and one shotgun shell...aimed at Santa and Boom, the gun wentoff ...Santa got plugged in the behind with 50 or 60 BBs, his echo was heard for miles around. ...Santa went after Rudolph with a gun... a four inch slug missed his hind end by about a half an inch. The next shot took off his nose. The next shot nailed him right in the head. now Then Santa shot him in the gut just for the fun of it ....I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus underneath the mistletoe last night. When trying to get away, they found they were stuck, Santa went off dragging Mommy by her tongue.... ...Granny shot the star dust right out from under the feet of those eight reindeer...Granny had a bear trap just big enough to hold the seat of Santas pants in the bottom of her chimney ...she then went out and partied and felt it had been a heck of a night ...St. Nick, the jello belly boy was a very short guy, and the other kids used to laugh and call him names, like fatso....Santa ya nice little jello belly, youll go down in history. ....Santa didnt have enough toys so he broke into Lionel Play world and stole theirs, Santa was arrested. ...We didnt receive any toys, wondered why. A couple of weeks later there was an ungodly smell through the house, and we found he had got stuck in the chimney. ...NightbeforeChristmas and Mrs. Claus asked foradivorce. Santa went to the nearest bar, Drinks are on me! Drank all the beers and began acting strange.... ...Santa got totally drunk..tipped over the sleigh with all the Santa fell through the air exclaiming Merry Christmas to All. and toys, As he splashed all over the ground the only thing left of Santa was a bowl full of jelly. Had enough? Christmases are different these days. I know, I know, the older generation always thinks its ways are best...but what has really happened to Christmas? ' Isnt Christmas supposed to be a time of love and joy? A time ofnot just'geuing, but of giving. And the biggest and best gift of all is the Gift of Self, isnt it? And somewhere underneath all the tinsel and pleas for gifts from Santa, the real meaning and purpose of Christmas lies half hidden from our view. Lets try to remember that for nearly 2,000 years Christians every were have remembered with joy a star blazing in thenight; angel choirs. Wise men and humble shepherds honoring and greeting with love, the tiny babe, bom to be the Saviour of the world. I love Letters to the holiday season Volunteers thanked To The Editor: During the holiday season Im always pleased to see a surge of newspaper and TV reports about the 440,000 community volunteers who save through our ACTION programs. Americans volunteers truly embody the seasons spirit of giving and caring. But this is also a good time to recognize that volunteer efforts are not mere feel good stories to warm our hearts during the holidays. Volunteer achievement is vital to our na- tions future. Without community action by involved citizens, we stand little chance of conquering the great challenges of drug abuse, illiteracy, homelessness, hunger and undereducation among our at risk youngsters. The tragedy of drug abuse gets headlines, but volunteers who effectively fight drugs gain too little notice, and the public too rarely learns about programs that work and could be carried out in their own communities with private incentive and non-glowi- If we dig deeply enough and brush away some of the commercialism that has become such a big part of Christmas, that simple message of hope, joy and peace can still come shining through. The world is full of unrest this Christmas season. There is great sorrow, great unhappiness everywhere. But wasnt the message given on that night so long ago. Peace on Earth? Through faith we can find that peace. I hope your Christmas is a happy one, and that you will be able to find that inner peace and happiness as promised on that night so long ago. cggaaaigTB Whos got the greatest toys around? We do! Sam Ware briefly overviewed the District insurance coverage and potential liability that could be involved with a request of this nature. The request was approved, and the district was encouraged to proceed with a formulation of a policy that would help in guidance for this type of request Richfield High Schools Music Department will be traveling to Los Angeles, CA to compete in the national Events band and choir competition May support. Eight years ago. President Reagan challenged Americans to mobilize and form partnerships to help each other. The people rehas sponded, and volunteering reached record heights, with 45 percent of all adults - - or 80 million citizens now active as volunteers. In celebrating the holidays let us renew our personal commitment and ask what we can do -through our businesses and churches, through our schools and civic groups, and as actively involved citizens - to boost the activities of local volunteer organizations and help them find new avenues to expand and grow. In this way we will keep the holiday spirit alive throughout the new year. The people that thrive on the drug trade are betting that our volunteer spirit is a flash in the pan. Its a bad bet. The war on drugs will be won by men and women who care enough to pitch in - to find out how they can nourish volunteer initiatives in their communities. There are few better ways to fill our holidays with lasting and meaningful joy.
