Show i 1 j The Salina Sun Wednesday. Dec.21.19Sa n Fishlake Resort will School buses continued North Sevier has two teacher-driverwhile Richfield high has 6; and South Sevier has four. Each high school in the is district assigned a 36 passenger mini bus, which is used for trips with small groups. Although these are type buses, they are 1985 models. A specially equipped bus, purchased this year, is operated for handicapped special education needs. Most of the buses are the large 84 passenger type, though some older ones carry 66 6r 78 passengers. Some of the fleet have diesel engines, which pro vide better fuel efficiency and greater safety since diesel fuel has a lower flash point The three new buses being ordered will be equipped with diesel engines. School buses built prior to 1977 have become a controversial issue in the state media. Statistics published in the Deseret News showed half the districts in the state, including Sevier, to have the highest 7 buses. Acpercentage of cording to the report, Sevier has 33 buses, with 39 percent of the total fleet being outdated, socalled unsafe models. However, Sam Ware, of the coaches. s; ss pre-197- District Board, notes that more recent figures show 34 school buses in the fleet with old buses making up 29 percent of the total. Other ""safety factors questioned by the media recently have been the inadequacy of emergency exits; placement of fuel tanks; and from page 9 the materials used to cover the seats. Some experts say placement of fuel tanks isntas important as insulating them and engineering out of the basic design any sharp objects that might puncture the tank and allow the fuel to spread to some exterior source of ignition. windows Installing push-ofor additional emergency exits; protecting fuel tanks from puncture and explosion; and using non flammable materials in seat coverings would seem to be the best safety measures to take, most experts agree. However, even with whatever dangers may ex ist, the safety record of school bus drivers still exceeds that of passenger car drivers. Another important factor in school bus safety is teaching children how to be careful pedestrians when approaching or leaving a bus. Each year one or two fender-bendaccidents happen, but the last one that involved student injury was several years ago in Aurora. School personnel are supplied on a regular basis with awareness information, and PTA groups often provide further training to promote bus safety. Sevier School District Superintendent Brent Rock said he will recommend to the school board that they adhere to their established 7 purchasing schedule until all the models are replaced. We consider student safety a high priority, he said, and will continue to update our school bus fleet so we can continue to provide the safest possible transportation for children of Sevier County. ut er pre-197- keep access road open Fishlake Resort has acquired a snow plow and large capacity snow blower which will enable the resort to keep the Fish Lake Road (State highway 25 - open year round. This will open Fish Lakes recreational opportunities to the ice fisherman, snowmobiler, and cross country skier, as well as all summer recreation enthusiasts. In the past, Fishlake was only accessible by snowmobile dur- ing the winter months. Now due to the new equipment, winter enthusiasts can drive directly to Fish Lake. Christmas Tidings Ron Nielsen Administrator Richfield Care Center This is a good time of the year when, more than ever before, we seem to feel the love of others. And dont you agree the reason for feeling others love is because were more loving to others? We all know that Christmastime is for the real Christ and His powerful influence of love and good will among all men. Dont those most fond memories of childhood include the special participation in a school play, or church program, or family Christmas party that brought the true love of Christ into your heart? Ive noticed that as I walk the halls of the Care Center this time of year, there is a special feeling and lifting spirit. This is different from any other time of the year. Our staff is truly a loving, caring team, but at this time of year, it is manifested even greater. And thats because of the spirit of our Savior that permeates our hearts and on to our hands as we lift those beautiful patients we are privileged to serve. Many of us sing a new song that has come on the scene since I was a child. That song really typifies what Christmas is all about. It goes something like this: As I have loved you, love one another. This new commandment, love one another. By this shall men know, ye are my disciplines. If ye have love one to another. Christmas is Christ and His great love for us and His great concern that we love one another. Let me express my love and that of our staff to you our friends and neighbors, especially at Christmastime. We appreciate your concern and love for our patients as you visit and help lift their hearts. We wish you a very Merry Christmas filled with the love of the season, filled with the love of Christ, fir that is Christmas. HO SANTA: Santa visited children in Aurora last Saturday, and gave them rides in the wagon as well as a candy treat. The weather was nippy, but just right for singing Jingle Bells' as Santa, his team of horses, and the wagon load of kids trotted through the town. Ray Hunt, principal, said that the Bookmobile stops in the various communities along its route, but does not stop at the schools. He said he supported the bookmobile, and said it serves a valid purpose in rural Utah. It was noted that a few years ago, when the bookmobile did stop at the schools, there was high book usage. The bookmobile now, mainly is serving adults. It was suggested that the bookmobile stop in the communities at the schools. Bookmobile personnel said that the current schedule does not allow enough time, and the bookmobile does not have enough books under the current plan to serve in this way. It was estimated that with $17,000 per year about 350 new books could be purchased for each elementary school. s ' The Board alsot discussed the duplication of library service in the county of the bookmobile, school libraries, and public libraries. The issue was tabled for this time, but will be brought up for approval or disapproval at the last meeting in January after the Board has reviewed financial and audit reports. 1 AMtq Family, DINNER ROLLS 4, The future of the services of the Bookmobile were discussed at the December 8 th meeting of the District School Board.
