Show Volume X Issue IV THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 13 June 1, 2004 NISSAN XTERRA Comes to Weber County The Greater Ogden Athletic Legacy (GOAL) Foundation announced their intention to sponsor a Nissan Xterra Off Road Triathlon on June 26, 2004. This multi-sport competition that combines swimming, mountain biking, and trail running will take place in Ogden Valley this year. Board of Director Chairperson for GOAL, Barbara Taylor, is excited to see this event visit Weber County. “The mission of the GOAL Foundation is to help bring economic prosperity to Weber County through sport, and we are hopeful that this event is a good first step.” The beautiful course is perfectly suited for an Xterra experience. It is one of the most breathtaking courses of any Off-Road Triathlon, and includes a 1000 meter mass start swim in Pineview Reservoir – a gorgeous mountain-rimmed, snow fed lake. Participants will have a 9:30 a.m. start at the Pineview Reservoir windsurfing beach. After the swim there is a challenging singletrack trail for mountain bikes that threads through a deep limestone slot canyon, as it follows a swollen mountain stream. This should challenge all who enter. “If athletes aren’t seeing stars from the experience, they’ll be amazed by the huge wildflower meadows, thick stands of aspens and abundant wildlife along the route,” said race coordinator Mike Caldwell. After about 12 miles of pain and pleasure, participants will roll into the base lodge area of Snowbasin, home of the 2002 Winter Olympic Downhill and Super Giant Slalom. There the competitors will make a quick transition and begin two 2 mile laps in the surrounding pines and aspens. Now in its fourth year, the 2004 Nissan Xterra USA Championship Series boasts 47 events in 28 states across the country. It’s the only series of its kind for age group athletes, which provides amateur multi-sporters with a bona-fide championship to compete against other athletes the same age, within their geographic region. The first Xterra race was held in 1996 with 123 competitors in Maui. The demand for the sport exploded thereafter, and there are now more than 30 countries worldwide who participate. Simply put, Xterra has evolved into the most prestigious off-road multi-sport race in the world. All applicants that register on or before June 3, 2004 will receive GOAL’s First Annual Ogden Off-Road Triathlon T-shirt. Registration is $50.00 per individual participant, and $99.00 for relay teams. Registration forms may be downloaded from the GOAL Foundation website and then mailed or faxed. It is also possible to link to online registration at <www.goalfoundation.com> There will be no registration on the day of the race. Race registration and volunteer information are available on this website, or for further information contact Mike Caldwell at 801 776-6300. After June 3, the registration costs will be an additional $10.00 per person, but obtaining an event T-shirt is not guaranteed. An additional USA Triathlon fee is $9.00 for a one-day license, per person. There will also be opportunities for booth displays at the Xterra Festival at Snowbasin on race day, at the cost of $50.00 per booth. Those interested in sponsorship for this event can choose from the following: Platinum $1000.00 and up; Gold — $500.00; Silver — $250.00; Bronze — $100.00. The GOAL Foundation was founded in April, 2003, with the primary mission to become a vehicle to enhance economic development in Weber County through cultural/sporting events. Turn right on the service road and make a short climb. Turn right on the Technical Singletrack, which brings you out on a service road. Hang a left here, and begin the steep climb to Shortcut Singletrack on the right. Veer right at the end of this singletrack and continue straight to the end of the road and drop into the Mushroom Singletrack. Climb to the right of the Sunrise Platter Lift to a short downhill, and a “very sharp” left to the road. Take the service road for 25 yards and then take a right to climb to Hidden Lake Lodge for a completed lap. 3.8 miles of each 6 mile lap is singletrack! There are a few Race Guidelines for the Intermountain Cup Mountain Bike Racing Series: Each racer must sign a release form confirming their understanding that there are risks involved in mountain bike racing. Each racer is responsible for carrying his or her health insurance. Pre-riding and racing a course is at the racers’ own risk. If you feel you cannot be responsible for you own actions, please do not preride or race in any of the races. Each rider is classified according to his or her age on December 31 of the current year. This is their racing age. Every rider warming up or racing shall wear a protective, securely fastened helmet that satisfies at least one of the following helmet standards: (1) ANZI Standard Z90.1 or Z90.4 (2) Snell Memorial Foundation standard “B”, “M” or “N” series (3) ASTM standard F1447 (4) DOT motorcycle helmet standard. A Beginner rider should advance to Sport, and a Sport rider to Expert after placing in the top 5 in 5 races that have a finishing field size of 20 or more. Riders may advance as quickly as they wish. However, once a rider has moved up he or she must talk with the Intermountain Cup Director to move back down in category. Ignorance of the rules is not admitted as an excuse. During a race the individual racer should perform all repairs, and the individual racer should carry spare parts and tools. Penalties will not be assessed to a racer that borrows labor or equipment from another racer. A rider may be suspended for up to two years for damaging or destroying public or private property. DO NOT LITTER. If you are using a gel or gu product please use a flask to eliminate litter. Ask the series director if you do not have a flask and he will probably give you one. Only riders officially entered in the event may practice or compete on the designated race course and they must wear their number plate and helmet at all times. Dogs and bikes don’t mix. T-boning a dog with your Trek is not a lot of fun. Please leave Fido at home if at all possible. If you must bring your dog, ALWAYS keep him on a leash.
