Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 6 Volume X Issue IV June 1, 2004 Announcements First Holy Communion Saint Florence Catholic Church First Holy Communion The celebration of First Holy Communion for St. Florence 2004 on May 2, 2004 was one of our community’s largest classes. The group received the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, a practice which dates back to the Last Supper when Jesus Christ shared his Last Supper with the Twelve Disciples. Father Cummins served the sacrament to each child after the instruction of prayers and lessons of Jesus Christ. Special thanks to Sue Hoffman, Father Cummins and the other teachers that helped in making this celebration of the First Holy Communion for the boys and girls. Family members from Ogden Valley and different cities from all over the United States came to take part in this celebration. Congratulations to the First Holy Communion Group of 2004. Harris, of Huntsville, have been called to serve in the Missouri Independence Mission. They spoke at the Huntsville 1st Ward on May 16. Elder Clair Dearden and Sister Ann Dearden, of Liberty, have returned home after serving in the Taiwan Kaohsiung Mission. They spoke at the Liberty 1st Ward on May 16. Celeste C. Appointments in Ogden Valley upon request. Obituaries Lloyd Joseph Herrick OGDEN - Lloyd J. Herrick passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004 in Ogden at the age of 89. He was born December 27, 1914 in West Weber, a son of Joseph W. and Elizabeth Ellen Hooge Herrick. He attended school in West Weber and Weber High School. Lloyd married Gwen D. Dickson on July 11, 1938 in Eden, Utah. Their vows were later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as Elders Quorum Counselor, a Home Teacher and the magazine representative for 20 years. He was also a member of the High Priest Quorum of the Sullivan Hollow 1st Ward. Lloyd was a plant and heavy equipment operator for Hadley Construction and later was foreman of the Clarence Waterfall Sand and Gravel Plant in South Weber for 15 years. He also worked at McKay-Dee Hospital Engineering Department for 11 years, retiring on December 28, 1979. Lloyd is survived by his wife Gwen, Ogden; son, Ronald L. (Marlene) Herrick, Gilbert, AZ; daughter, DeAnn (Bruce) Galbraith, Mountain. Green; nine grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. The family expresses special thanks to Hospice and the care provided by Lissa Pitts and Heather McKinnon. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary. Interment was at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park. Email condolences to the family at <lom@lindquistmortuary.com> Dr. George Henry Lowe, Jr. Dr. Lowe died May 12, 2004 at home. He was born in St. Anthony, Idaho on May 13, 1916 to Alta Annetta Kerr Lowe and George Henry Lowe. The family moved to Ogden when he was 12, where a great teacher, Sarah McCracken ignited in him a great passion for learning which lasted his entire life. He became an Eagle Scout and was a counselor at Camp Kiesel with S. Dilworth Young. He later received the Silver Beaver award for his many contributions to scouting. Graduating from Ogden High School, he went on to receive bachelor and masters degrees in endocrinology from Northwestern University. After completing medical school, also at Northwestern, he completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago. His surgical residency was at the Mayo Clinic, with which he maintained a close association throughout his life. He met his sweetheart Beth Felt following graduation from medical school, and she joined him for his residencies after marrying in the Salt Lake Temple on September 7, 1943. They moved to Ogden and started his surgical practice, being one of only three board certified surgeons at the time. He became Chief of Surgery at McKay-Dee Hospital and was President of the Ogden Surgical Society. He served his community, state and nation as a Kiwanian, as Chairman of the Board of Blue Cross Blue Shield, and in 1966, as a volunteer for Project Viet Nam, treating civilian casualties North of Saigon. He loved experiencing other cultures, and taught his children to do so by inviting students and friends from other countries to share his home. He loved the outdoors, teaching his children and grandchildren river running, hiking, camping, skiing, swimming, and taking them to Boulder Cove in Wayne County and Argyle Creek in Duchesne County. He is predeceased by his son David and grandson Elroy, and survived by his wife, Beth F. Lowe; sons, George III (Liz), John (Nancy), Steve (Ruth) and Bob (Chris); daughter, Alta Davis (Rick); daughter-in-law, Susan, and informally adopted sons Chou Mounarath and Haavard Nordlie. George and Beth have 31 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and four more on the way. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, May 15. in the Kingston Ward Chapel. Interment was at the Huntsville Cemetery.
