Show Page 4 THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume X Issue IV June 1, 2004 New Exhibits at Eccles Community Art Center The Eccles Community Art Center will open two exhibits on Friday, June 4th, 2004. The Main Gallery will display an Artists’ Invitational exhibit with works by local artists: Julie Brandt, Nancy G. Clark, Brandon Cook, Cara Koolmees, Shanna Kunz, Kirk Larsen, Kevin Parson and Mac Stevenson. The Carriage House Gallery will feature the watercolors of Kasandra Beck. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 4th from 6 to 9 p.m. The Eccles Community Art Center is participation in the Historic 25 street stroll. Admission is free. The public is invited. Julie Brandt lives and paints in Liberty, Utah “where the landscape, people, and sometimes livestock inspire her.” Her style has developed from traditional watercolor to experimental acrylic and collage. She is constantly learning, exploring and finding excitement every step of the way. Nancy Grisanti Clark is a California native, who moved to Utah with her husband a few years ago. She says “My paintings have grown more abstract with inspiration from the mountains and canyons around me. “Mood” is what I am after in my paintings, and I’ll use whatever medium best achieves it.” Brandon Cook indicates “I paint landscapes because it offers a common ground where the viewer can relate to my work while I am afforded the freedom to challenge the boundaries of the paint. With multiple layers of paint and glazes, I strive to emulate the process of creation and destruction with a visual history that reflects the natural order and somewhat conflicting definition of beauty.” Originally from California, Cara Koolmees has been painting watercolors for years. She says “I have a studio on 25th Street, and I enjoy painting the historic buildings, treating them as portraits. I look for interesting subjects that I can interpret with exaggerated colors.” Shanna Kunz ’s “ recent series of paintings are contemporary landscapes depicting quiet and familiar scenes of the mountainous West. These pieces emerge from an intensely personal relationship with place and atmosphere.” She prefers “style over detail, interpreting subtleties of color and planes of space in a way that visually articulates my emotional connection to the environment.” Kirk Larsen explores regional landscapes in his paintings, capturing familiar scenes and places. Many of his paintings seem to take inspiration from the views he sees from his home in Harrisville. Kirk works most often in oil and acrylics. Kevin Parson is a clay artist. His pottery shapes are creative yet often functional. He presently resides (and has his studio) in Eden, Utah. Mac Stevenson says “A writer may record events and impressions in a diary. Then at a later time, he can relive the event with pleasure, feeling the moment captured again as the words are read. As an artist my paintings are like a diary, recording the mood of the moment when the shadows are long. The contrast is intense and the atmosphere has the feel of eternity. Hopefully as one views my work they can feel that moment.” Kasandra Beck says of her watercolors featured in the Carriage House Gallery, “My purpose in creating art is largely aesthetic. Creating beautiful things arouses my spirit, a n d refines my body. May my work arouse this same joy in all those who view?” The public is invited to visit the Eccles Community Art Center, and Carriage House Gallery located at 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden.
