Show Volume IV, Issue IV THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 15 June 1, 2001 BIOGRAPHY cont. from page 14 This was a wonderful trip for him. He saw beautiful valleys, and had a vision of the opportunities they offered. He heard of a beautiful valley east of Ogden, and decided to go there. He sold his farm in Cottonwood and went up into the north end of the valley. He selected a beautiful spot and built a log house. It was a delightful place in the summer, but there was lots of snow in the wintertime. He liked the valley but was not adapted to be a farmer. He did not hesitate when President Young called him back to Salt Lake City again. Ogden Valley cast a spell over the family. His three daughters, Lizzie, Mary and Christina married, and they and their husbands took land in the north end, and also his son Jim (James). He also married, and he and his wife and family also went to the Valley. Father went back to the Valley to be the blacksmith for the farmers of the three towns. He took Jessie Wilbur to work with him blacksmithing. He was one of the stalwarts of the community. Everyone felt keenly his wonderful spirituality. He was Sunday School Superintendent for years. He blessed many babies, and performed the ordinance of administration very often. People came to look upon him as one whom the Lord used as an instrument in blessing others. His power and influence for good were wonderful. Not only his family, but everyone who knew him loved and revered him for his kindness, generosity, patience, perseverance and high level of spirituality. After his beloved wife Mary passed away May 16, 1897 at age 76 years, he sold his shop to Jesse Wilbur, and built a little home in Liberty among his children who also lived in the Valley. When I moved to Ogden, I persuaded father to come and live with us. This he did, and he passed away on July 17, 1904. He was buried in the Eden Cemetery at the side of his lovely and beautiful wife Mary McBride Burt. Subscriptions available for out of area residents at $18.00 annually.
