Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 4 Volume IV, Issue IV June 1, 2001 Ogden Valley CERT Team Participates in North Ogden Mock Disaster Members of the Ogden Valley CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) were called up to help handle a mock disaster in North Ogden on Saturday, May 19. According to Ogden Valley’s Team Leader Chuck Millet the mock disaster involved a simulation of a Senior Citizen Center building that collapsed and trapped 64 victims inside. CERT teams throughout Weber County responded and performed TRIAGE (a search of the building and a categorization of victims according to extent of injury) and evacuated victims from the center. Those victims with extensive injuries were Life Flighted (by helicopter) to Ogden’s two hospitals. Those serious, but not urgent, were bused to the hospitals. Light injuries were treated at the LDS Stake Center nearby and released. The North Ogden Fire Department and Police Department, American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Weber County Sheriff’s Department were all involved. It was an extensive and wellplanned event. The national CERT rating group AVERT gave the participants high ratings for skills demonstrated at the Disaster. “These kinds of exercises are essential if we are to be ready for the ‘big one’ (earthquake), ” said Millet. Ogden Valley’s CERT Team received a steel storage unit for emergency supplies from Ben Toone of Eden. The unit is to be centrally located for easy access in summer or winter in event of an emergency. New Member Training Scheduled Training for new CERT volunteers will be held June 2 and June 9. Millet reported, “We now have over 50 trained members, but we need many more.” If interested, or if you would like to register, call an Area Captain, or Assistant Team Leader Linda Spencer at 778-6631 during the day, or 7450850 during the evening. Party Planned In place of the regular CERT monthly meeting, a member party is planned for Thursday, June 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Millet’s in Eden. Call for notice and food assignment 745-0951.
