Show Page 8 THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume IV, Issue IV June 1, 2001 Pathways News At a recent Pathways Conference held for the Weber Area Council of Governments (WACOG), Envision Utah reported that a supermajority (79%-89%) of Utahns “totally agreed” that it was critical to preserve open space, create a walkable community and build a network of trails and bikeways. The results of last year’s Quality Growth commissions study demonstrated that preserving critical lands was the number one priority in Weber County. The National Park Department reported nationwide examples demonstrating the power of pathways to promote quality of life and quality growth. Pathways consistently lead to increases in property values, community health, corporate relocation, aesthetics and safe routes for children. June 2 is National Trails Day. Several events are planned locally. At 8:00 a.m., there will be a Fun Run on the Eden and Pineview West Trails (approximately 5K). Meet at Snowcrest Junior High in Eden at 7:30 to register. At 9:00 a.m. there will be a dedication of the Eden Trail at Snowcrest Junior High. This trail, running from the North Arm Trailhead on Highway 158 to North River Drive, is a project of Ogden Valley Pathways. It will provide schoolchildren and residents a safe place to walk along the highway. It is being built mostly through the donations and labor of volunteers who will be recognized at the dedication. The event will include a ribbon-cutting, prizes for the runners, and a continental breakfast. Trail Map Completed. Weber Pathways has just published a full-color map showing all the major non-motorized rails in the county that are open to the public, plus Ogden City’s bike routes and some other suggested bike routes. On the reverse side are descriptions of these pathways. Work on the map was begun by Ogden Valley Pathways under the leadership of Lori Mortensen and Keith Rounkles. Research was done by chapter volunteers and Weber Pathways Executive Director Geoff Ellis. Computer work was done by the Weber County GIS Department, with support from the County. The U.S. Forest Service provided additional map data, and the trail descriptions were written by Russell Burrows. The map is available free of charge at the Union Station Visitors Center, the Ogden Nature Center, and the following businesses: Bingham Cyclery, Diamond Peak Ski and Sports, Jeremiah’s Restaurant, The Oaks Restaurant, Rainbow Gardens, Snow Basin Resort and Snowberry Inn. Notice of Public Hearing for Ogden Valley Pathways Master Plan. Ogden Valley Pathways is developing a Master Plan for non-motorized Pathways throughout Ogden Valley. The Master Plan will be used to develop a network of pedestrian, bike, equestrian and water trails for both recreational use and alternative transportation use. The Plan will also provide guidance for new residential and commercial areas of development and roadway alternation projects, and will address such issues such as safety, liability, private property rights, environmental and wildlife concerns. During the planning process, Ogden Valley Pathways is seeking broad based citizen participation and support from the public and the associated Planning Commissions and Committees in Ogden Valley, and ultimately, adoption by the Weber County Commission. An Ogden Valley Pathways Master Plan Community workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, June 21, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Ogden Valley Library in Huntsville. All interested citizens are encouraged to attend and participate. The desired outcome of this Community Workshop is to provide the public with an understanding of the proposed Master Plan, gather opportunities and concerns, and arrive at maps of ideas, potential pathway routes, amenities, activity nodes, sensitive trail heads, etc. Student Winners of Pathways Essay Contest Announced.
