Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 12 Volume IV, Issue IV June 1, 2001 NBA Update Jen Beasley Student Reporter I have attended numerous Jazz, Starzz, and local college games, but I recently had the opportunity to see the Milwaukee Bucks take on the Charlotte Hornets in a Game 7 showdown, and I was amazed at the difference in arena atmosphere. I hate to say it, but the Bucks supporters blew us Jazz fans right out of the water when it came to how loud they were, not to mention how painted up. Now granted, the Bradley Center seats about ten thousand more people than the Delta Center, and Wisconsin beer is twice as potent as the stuff in Utah, but the enthusiasm that streamed from every fan in the stadium was something one sees too rarely at a Jazz game, and it wasn’t the result of more people or alcohol. It was pure fan loyalty. There were things one would never see at a Jazz game. When the fans didn’t agree with a call, rather than the typical booing one finds in most arenas, the entire stadium would begin a chant of VICTORIANAANTIQUES 901 East 26th Street (Quincy) Ogden, Utah 84401 801-399-3552, 391-5714 DEALING IN HIGH QUALITY ANTIQUES POPULAR GLASSWARE, POTTERY, CROCKERY, CLOTHING, LINENS FINE ART BY UTAH ARTISTS FUN LINE OF NEW GIFT ITEMS MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING WITH NEW ENGLAND APPRAISERS ASSOCIATION WILL TAKE QUALITY ANTIQUES ON CONSIGNMENT Open 12:00 - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday Bull…om…Crap, except that crap could not be considered a direct quote. This was not something that was prompted on the Jumbotron, nor was it planned before the game. As the man I sat by explained it to me, this is something that was started years ago, and has become a tradition at Bucks games. After Milwaukee finished off Charlotte to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, the fans didn’t leave the stadium like most NBA fans do. Instead, everyone stayed right where they were and sang along with the Bucks rap “Light It Up,” which was written especially for the team and was played throughout the coarse of the game. Where one can usually find a handful of supporters for the road team at any given match up, there were no Hornets fans to be found. Seemingly everybody in the stadium made it obvious that they were Bucks fans; to my left were people videotaping the game for proof that they were there, and to my right was a young couple painted entirely green and purple. Behind me was an 86 year old man who had attended the very first Bucks game and had been a loyal fan ever since. What I was most impressed with though, was the way the fans appreciated Milwaukee Coach George Karl. When the starting line-up is introduced, usually the coach is a muttered afterthought tossed in with the referees, and the crowd ignores it. But in Milwaukee, Karl was the first Buck introduced, and he got as much applause as Bucks’ superstars Ray Allen or Sam Cassell did. Usually a coach only gets credit for his team’s performance if they do badly, but the Wisconsin fans seemed to understand who had pushed them back to the top. So what does all this tell you? Not only do we know that Bradley Center patrons have no beef with saying the “S—-” word, but we know that this is a franchise that is not based on bandwagon hoppers or reputation alone. The Milwaukee Bucks seem to have a good thing going with their fans, and I think Jazz fans, and sports fans in general, could learn something from those in the Bradley Center who, rain or shine, are chanting “Goh Bucks Goh.” Questions?
