Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 8 Volume II, Issue XVIII September 15, 2000 Second Annual Cycle for Life Benefit Ride Slated By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Staff The second annual Ogden Valley Cycle for Life benefit ride will be held September 23, 2000. The ride is organized to benefit cyclists that have been injured by drunk drivers and is presented by Cyclists Against Drunk Driving (CADD). Proceeds from the event are used to help with medical bills incurred by cyclists injured by such drivers. CADD and local cyclists worked together a year ago to raise money for three cyclists injured by a person driving under the influence in May of 1999. Overwhelming community support made it clear that more effort was needed to raise awareness about safety on the road for everyone. CADD was organized as a non-profit foundation committed to continue helping injured cyclists. They are also promoting programs to teach bicycle safety to children and adults, and bring attention to the importance of sharing the road. A little over a year after their horrible accident the three injured cyclists are accomplishing some amazing feats. Brian Carlson, whose left leg was amputated, is learning to walk on a prosthetic leg. He was able to return to work in February and is working four days a week. While he was still in the hospital last year, Brian married his fiancée Cathy. In July, Brian and Cathy were married for the second time to celebrate their lives together with family and friends. The highlight of the evening was watching Brian walk his beautiful bride down the isle. He is talking about possibly riding a handcrank bike or tandem in the future. Brook Mickelson suffered a crushed pelvis and many other injuries from the accident. She recently entered a race just to find out where she is as a return cyclist. She became so overwhelmed by the exhilaration of riding again that any worries about coming in last quickly disappeared. A group of girls in Salt Lake City have invited her to join them on their team. She is thrilled to talk about the camaraderie she will enjoy as she rides with a group of girls who want her to join them in riding. Maikel Wise, who recovered from a collapsed lung, was able to start riding again within a few months of the accident. He has returned to his active outdoor life, and just completed the State Time Trial Championships with a new Men-Men division time of 50:10. Registration for this year’s Ogden Valley ride will begin at 7:00 a.m. at the Eden Park in Eden, Utah. A raffle will begin at 7:45 a.m., and the ride will start at 8:00 a.m. The Eden Park Committee will also serve breakfast starting at 7:00 a.m. Cost of the breakfast will be $5.00 with part of the proceeds going to CADD. There will be four options for this year’s ride. An easy eight mile ride, perfect for families; a 30 mile tour of Ogden Valley, for those wanting more miles without the climb; and both a 66 mile and a 100-mile tour of Ogden Valley with a ride over Trappers Loop, a tour of Morgan Valley and a return trip over Trappers. The 100-mile tour will circle Morgan Valley twice. Events that are scheduled in conjunction with the ride include a bike rodeo, BMX and mountain bike demos, maintenance clinics, massages and more. 801-745-4000 2555 WOLF CREEK DRIVE EDEN, UTAH STORE HOURS: MON. - SAT. 7 AM - 10 PM SUNDAY 7 AM - 9 PM Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream 1/2 gal. $1.99 with coupon $3.49 w/out coupon 2.49 coupon value Limit 2 per purchase Expires 9/30/00 Giant Case Lot Sale Coming September 21st thru October 6th Pepsi Products cents with coupon $.69 $1.25 w/out coupon 2 liters Limit 4 per coupon Expires 9/30/00 1.68 coupon value Registration cost the day of the ride, at the park, is $25.00 for adults; and children under 12, $7.00.
