Show Volume II, Issue XVIII THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 7 September 15, 2000 SLOC Announces 500-Day Countdown Celebration to Put New Face on the 2002 Games SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—On September 6, Mitt Romney, President and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) announced a 500Day Countdown Celebration to be held on September 26, 2000 at the Gallivan Center. During the celebration, NBC will broadcast live in primetime the unveiling of a 265-foot building wrap featuring an Olympic athlete displayed on SLOC’s headquarters building in a fireworks extravaganza. “We’ve been through a lot together, it’s time to put the past behind us,” said Mitt Romney. “The face of the Games are the people of Utah and it’s time to introduce the world to our community. SLOC has achieved numerous milestones in the past year of which we can all be proud. We’ve generated unprecedented sponsorship revenue, venue construction is ahead of schedule and we just reached our 25,000th volunteer registration. The spotlight is going to shine on Salt Lake City and it’s time to welcome it with confidence.” The celebration is free to the public, and Romney wants the community of Utah to come together on September 26 as we invite the world to join us in Salt Lake City for a winter Olympic celebration beginning on February 8, 2002. The first 1,000 people at the Gallivan Center will receive a free Olympic collector’s pin marking the 500-Day Countdown. There will also be the Bank of America Down Under Tour, entertainment, Olympic retail merchandise, concessions and SLOC’s Short Sports program. To place your scheduled event inthe Calendar of Events, call Shanna Francis 745-2688 or Jeannie Wendell 745-2879 Ogden Area, Governor’s Marriage Conference Scheduled The Governor’s Initiative on Families Today (G.I.F.T.) is hosting an Ogden Area Marital Enrichment Conference on Friday evening, September 22 at the Marriott Hotel in Ogden. It will be an exciting evening of education, dining, and entertainment. The committee for G.I.F.T. felt a strong need to provide couples with useful, positive skills. This year’s conference theme is “Caring Connections” and will feature ten workshops to choose from, all focused on building and strengthening marriages. The workshop presenters will include Kent Allen, Julianne Arbuckle, Anna Jane Arroyo, Charles Beckert, Craig Campbell, Randy Chatelain, Rich Green, Lacee Harris, Maria Parrilla, Charles Petty, Michael Rigby, and Chris Thomas. After two workshop sessions, Gary Wilden, “Dr. Fun,” will take over as the Master of Ceremonies for the rest of the evening. The Keynote Speaker will be Mrs. Utah Jackie Thompson and her husband Edward Thompson. They will be sharing their ideas and suggestions for “Caring Connections.” To top the evening off, “The Cadillacs” will provide the entertainment. They are a wonderfully talented, mixed quartet who will delight the audience with their fun and nostalgic music.
