Show Page The Ogden Valley news Volume XV Issue II January 1, 2008 Free Interactive Storytimes @ Your Library Did you know that the Ogden Valley Branch Library currently offers FREE storytimes? If not, now is the perfect time to start taking advantage of these wonderful Discovery Time programs! Each storytime is designed to be completely interactive with stories, fingerplays, art projects, singing and dancing, and lots of great information about early literacy. Discovery Time helps introduce infants and toddlers to the amazing world of reading and music. All children from infancy through five years old, and their caregivers, are invited to participate in lively sing-alongs, playing of instruments, and enjoyment of great stories. Discovery Time is held in 45 minute sessions on Monday mornings at 10:30 a.m. The program also includes great handouts and activities that participants can take home and use to continue exploring the themes and ideas presented. The Fine Art of Living Exhibit Opens Living and Loving is what life is all about! Experience the emotions, creativity, and energy that the artists convey – living life fully! Artists represented by Wilkerson Fine Art & Consulting present “The Fine Art of Living” Exhibit of original artwork “Daddy’s Okay” by Linda Ryan beginning January 2 at Wolf Creek Resort’s The Gallery. The Gallery, Wolf Creek’s new private dining nook located in the clubhouse, is open daily to the public. This exhibit will truly ring in the New Year as it presents a celebration of life, rebirth, and a new look and feel to the gallery space. Artists will be offering luscious images that will set the tone and feel for whatever space you want to create. The Ogden Valley Branch Library is located at 131 S. 7400 E. in Huntsville. Weber Reads . . . Beowulf: The Date is Set! As a part of the 2008 Weber Reads Program, the Ogden Valley Branch Library is challenging Valley residents to read and discuss the timeless tale of Beowulf. To help residents accomplish this, a book discussion will be held at the library on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:00 p.m. This book discussion will give participants the opportunity to explore this unique story that, though age-old, remains resonant and relatable to modern readers. Copies of Beowulf: An Imitative Translation are now available for checkout at the Ogden Valley Branch Library. This program is FREE and open to the public. Registration is required. RAMP Grant Establishes Family Art Activities The Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden has received Weber County RAMP grant funds to establish a family art activity day each month. Named Second Saturday Arts, this project consists of free visual and performing art activities for parents to experience with their children ages 4 to 12 years old. Instruction and activities begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue through 12:00 noon on the second Saturday of the month. On Saturday, January 12, 2008, Eccles Community Art Center will explore the art calligraphy with participating families. Utah Calligraphic Artists Adele Greenleaf and Mary Wells will assist families in the creation of handmade books and illuminated letters. Paper, glue sticks, and other basic supplies will be available. Space is limited, and projects are based on a “first come, first served” basis. Photography of Don Thorpe and Artwork of Debra Martineau Now on Display The Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden, will be displaying the photography of Don O Thorpe of Salt Lake City in the Main Gallery during January 2008. The Carriage House Gallery will feature paintings by Debra Martineau of South Ogden. An artist reception is planned for the evening of the First Friday Stroll on Friday, January 4 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The work of these two artists will remain on exhibit through January 28. Don Thorpe says, “My approach to photography has always been a distillation of reality into a personal vision—an individual process that purifies and condenses images to emotion and interpretation. I want the viewer to know how I felt about the subject. And usually those projected feelings take on a positive attitude. There is enough negativity and misery in the world; thus, I want to show the good that is inherent in all that I photograph. I have been told that some of my photographs look like paintings, but on close examination they are not painterly, nor are they traditional photographs. However, they may be something in between or something altogether different. My imaging process is directed by an attitude rather than techniques. I deliberately eliminate unnecessary detail and texture, and purify the tones and colors to reveal the essence of the subject. The resulting photographs are Impressionistic in visual character and Expressionistic in emotional and intellectual content.
