The program, part of the Freedom Support Act (FSA), was originally conceived by former Senator Bill Bradley who believed that true democracy could only be realized through the young people of the New Independent States. The former Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1991 when the 15 republics of the USSR declared their independence. The term “New Independent States” refers to 12 of the former Soviet republics; Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. The American government spent untold billions of dollars over five decades in an effort to contain the threat of totalitarianism. The FLEX program provides an opportunity to build up the societies of these countries and thereby insure that the peoples of the former Soviet Union and the United States will continue on a path towards peace and understanding Students from the New Independent States are selected based on academic performance, English language competence, and personal qualities such as adaptability, flexibility, and openness. The major goals of the program are to: ~ ~ Acquire an understanding of important elements of a civil society. This includes concepts such as volunteerism—the idea that American citizens can and do act on their own to deal with societal problems—and an awareness of and respect for the rule of law. Show willingness and a commitment to ~ ~ ~ serve as agents for change in their countries after they return home Develop an appreciation for American culture. Interact with Americans and generate enduring Teach Americatis about the cultures of their home countries an teach citizens of their home countries about the United States Nacel Open Door, a non-profit leader in student exchange, has partnered with the U.S. Department of State and several other organizations in bringing these students into the U.S. for this program. Yet, we are reliant upon the good will of host families and school officials to accept and welcome them into local communities. Therefore we are seeking volunteer host families in your area to partner with us in our mission of promoting mutual understanding and respect between different cultures. The students are between the ages of 15 and . They are proficient in English and are very carefully screened. They come with their own spending money and insurance. Host families are responsible for providing room and board and should be willing to open their hearts and minds to the students’ unique culture and assist and support the students in having a wonderful experience. Local representatives from the area assist the host family, student, and school throughout the experience to support and help facilitate a resolution should any problems arise. If you would like more information or are interested in hosting a FLEX student, please email: tboyce_nm2@yahoo.com or call 801-745-3898, or visit our website at or <http://www.nacelopendoor.org/> We also have fantastic students from over 50 other countries that are ready to be part of a host family.
