Show & y , May 21, 1999 The Summit County Bee Page B2 Thumbody Loves Writing Student Jane Shupy is busily working on her thumb print characteri for a dan writing project Third graders in Mrs. Butikofers class love writing. One creative and fun project they have been working on is thumb print stories. Students were asked to make three thumb prints on a paper and turn those thumb prints into story characters. Each story could have only three characters. Students then wrote their story, and each student spent time with their teacher analyzing their work and checking to see if it made sense, if punctuation was correct and if words were spelled correctly. They learned about putting each new idea on a separate page. Then they wrote their story a second time. Stories were read again and students corrected any errors and began adding their thumb print illustrations. Each student learned about making the cover, the title page and an author page as well. Their teacher says that each student invested at least 7 hours into their completed story. Kaitlyn E Neff wrote the following story and agreed to share it with Bee readers. (This story is typed exactly as it was written.) HER LILY BEST AND FRIENDS! Once upon a time there lived a forty. She was ted with blue hair on top. her name was Lily. She had a monkey friend named Rascal. She had another friend which was a bear. His name was Sly. Sly, Lily, and Rascal played all day everyday together. They were really good frincds. One day Rascal got stuck in a human trap and couldnt get out! He bit, and pulled, clawed, and pushed! But still he couldnt get out. Lily climbed and pushed the net! Sly pulled and he too bit the net! And Rascal still couldn't get out. He slept in the net that night while his friends Lily and Sly slept below him. When they all woke up the next morning they tried again but still couldn't do it! So Lily and Sly went to find help. They were going to Rabbit's house first They knocked on the door. Knock! Knock! Hi!' Said Rabbit. "Hi" They said back at the same time. We need serious help. Said Sly." Ye! said Lily Well what is it? Speak up! Speak up!" Rascal is stuck in a net! Well why didn't you say so asked rabbit? So they went down to the net And once again started biting and clawing. Lily went up a tree and fell on something sharp. Ouch! She yelled as loud as she could. What are these? asked Rabbit Wow! Ive heard of these. Or else my name isnt Sly! Their called scissors! Rabbit took the scissors, pulled them open, and climbed up on Sly.s head. And at last cut the net! Rascal got out and they all lived happily ever after!
