BY JAN ROWLEY Students, Mark Yost, Brody Mondragon, Jordan Wilde, Jordan Thomas, Whitney Presrott, Amanda Young and Justin Brown are hard at work planting a tree In South Summit Elementary's Olympic Grove. y is a program to teach third grade students the ecological benefits of planting trees. This program delivered trees to every third grade program in Utah. The hope is that by the time of the 2002 Winter Games, there will be small Olympic Groves at each elementary school in the State. The trees were accompanied with a bookmark for each third grader outlining the benefits of planting Tree-colog- . trees. This program can provide a long term environmental classroom for teachers and students and will provide a sense of adventure and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds them. Third grade students would like to encourage all who visit South Summit Elementary to notice the Olympic Grove. It is located just South of the main parking lot up on the small hill. How do you spend your extra time? How would you spend 2,900 hours, or approximately 120 days, 17 weeks, four months. That's a lot of time! And that is the amount of time volunteered by 192 adults at the South Summit Elementary School this year. This averages out to me about 4.S hours per student donated this year by some pretty generous adults. On Wednesday, May 12, school invited the volunteers to attend a special ceremony in order to praise and thank them for so generously donating their time in order to make a difference in our children's lives. "We appreciate your volunteer work, Elementary School Principal, Myrl Louder told the audience of volunteers as he welcomed them and explained the program. Next, the sixth grade under the direction of Music Specialist, lieve my students learn 20 more in one year because of the time volunteers invest with each student, she said. It's not just the teachers who appreciate the volunteers cither, students in Mrs. Willoughby's first grade class told her, "1 feel really important when they listen to me read and "They think I'm smart". "Thank you. Willoughby told the volunteers. "Thank you for the power of your hour.. .for the smiles you bring to students faces.. . for helping to change the future by preparing children for the future.. .for being a positive role model.. .for understanding the power of a good education., .and for numbers and handed out tokens of making a big difference in the lives of our world's smallest people.
