Show 1998 JTERLING JCHOLARJ Planning and Preparation Four years of groundwork pays off in competition Sterling Scholars are talented individuals who excel in school, but what isn't common knowledge is the time and effort that goes into planning and preparing for the day of competition. Students vying for the coveted title of Sterling Scholar need to work each semester to keep their grade point average of about 3.5, and the "higher the better school counselors agree. It all starts as early as the 9th grade -from this time forward everything counts -and students are encouraged to develop a variety of interests and participate in as many activities as possible in their communities and schools. History and science fairs, music lessons, it all adds up to math competitions, 4-mold the student into a individual. Service in the community and church also counts, even taking summer Jobs and can be shown as part of working part-tim- e H, well-round- ed a student's credentials when putting together their portfolio for competition. School counselors suggest that parents assist their students in keeping a file of their child's yearly accomplishments with accompanying photos, certificates, ribbons, letters of recommendation, newspaper clippings and yearbook photos of any club activities. Careful record keeping of activities and projects will help the student when it comes to putting their portfolio together for the final region competition. Requirements have changed slightly in this area over the past few years. To date the portfolio cannot exceed 24 pages, six of those are required forms, which leaves 18 paps for students to fill, showing who they are, and what they've accomplished. Judges will spend hours pouring over contestant's portfolios, so ifs important that the student spend a good deal of time on them, however, the portfolio is only one part of the competition - the personal interview is even more important, and students must be able to do well in this area. "Ive seen a student with an outstanding portfolio who has trouble in the interview, and Ive seen students with poor portfolios who are exceptional in the interview ... Ive seen it both ways, said Nancy Percival, Union's Sterling Scholar advisor.
