Show 2 wMWMMmMMmM'A JTERLING CHOLAR 1998 Sterling Scholar, what it means and how it originated Begun in the early 1980's the annual Northeastern Utah Sterling Scholar Awards of sorts from the Deseret News are a spin-oKSL Sterling Scholar Awards program which was launched in 1962. Since then the designation of Sterling Scholar has become a coveted title and those who carry it are recognized as outstanding individuals in the world of ff academia and professional business. One former Sterling Scholar said that this distinction has helped her to attend the school she desired and paved the way to opportunities that she may not have had otherwise. The program recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement of high school seniors in the northeastern region of Utah which includes the counties of Rich, Morgan, Summit, Wasatch, Duchesne, Daggett and Uintah. Selection of Sterling Scholar winners are determined through academic history, leadership, service, citizenship and overall character of the individual. The competition is keen for Duchesne County's youth, school advisors say, be cause the district borders the Wasatch Front providing those who attend nearby schools additional learning opportunities which are not as available for students so far away. Yet, Basin students do very well considering this. Last year alone four of the district's students made Sterling Scholar and three were runners-uThe Northeastern Utah Sterling Scholar Awards program follows all of the guidelines set down by the Deseret News and KSL. The program is also sponsored in cooperation with the State Office of Education, district officials and high school administrators as well as colleges and universities who support the program by scholarships and other financial assistance. The Sterling Scholar Awards program was designed to provide students incentive to strive for academic excellence and then reward them through scholarships - and this tradition continues on today. Colleges and universities contribute valuable scholarship packages to the winners, Unions Sterling Scholar advisor reported: She said that most of all colleges in Utah will award full tuition scholarships to the p. regional winners, and most will offer full or part tuition to the runners-uAs well, the Northeastern Utah Sterling p. Scholar program offers cash awards. The winners will receive $500 and each runner-u- p will receive $250. In addition to these cash awards Duchesne County School District honors the each candidate from the school district with a cash award of $50. receive $150 in scholarship awards. Who will compete on April 21? Sterling Scholar nominees who participate in tiie Northeastern Utah Sterling Scholar program are from high schools located throughout Utah in several counties. Duchesne County School District seniors from Altamont, Duchesne, Tabiona and Union High will compete against students from Uintah High, Dugway High, Grantsville High, Morgan High, Manila High, North Summit High, Park City High, Wasatch High and Wendover High. Advisors over the Sterling Scholar program from each school work with teachers to nominate students in certain educational categories, they are; business, english, foreign language, gen- eral, health occupation, math, music, science, social science, speechdrama, visual art, dance, technology, and family, consumer sciences. On April 21 at the Eccles Center in Park City judges will choose one Sterling Scholar in each category, as well as one runner-u- p for the northeastern region. The scholarships will be awarded to someone who is seeking an education in healthcare.
