You want to go to college, but you don't qualify for an academic scholarship or financial aid and your plans for college are looking pretty bleak. Hold on there just a minute and don't despair! Uintah Basin businesses and private individuals want to help you out, says Connie Christensen, scholarship coordinator for Utah State University Uintah Basin Branch Campus. A lot of our donors are looking for students in need of financial assistance - those who might not qualify for Pell grants or academic scholarships, Christensen detailed. General scholarships are supported by local business and there is a real peed for this for those students in the middle with a solid 3.0 grade-poiaverage. Not only does the USU Uintah Basin Branch Campus offer numerous general scholarships for those solid students from middle-incom- e families, they also offer scholarships for adults as well as younger or traditional" college students, as well as for students who attend college on a part-tim-e basis. dont know of any other college that provides adult scholarships and scholarstudents. Christensen reports that the USU Uintah Basin Branch Campus offers about 140 scholarships annually worth an estimated $100,000. Scholarships are awarded for everything from academic performance to leadership skills, and to cowboys and cowgirls who excel in the rodeo low-inco- nt 1 ll, arena. About half of those scholarships are possible due to local donations, she says. The scholarships are good for students who attend the branch campus in Roosevelt and Vernal, and Christensen notes that the scholarship money is just one savings for the family and the community when it comes to education dollars. "I'm not sure that people in the Basin realize what a savings there is by attending college here, and there's about $6,000 per student that goes into the local economy. Ifs like an economic boost Our local (scholarship) providers realize that and have been very generous. Christensen says that the USU Uintah Basin Branch Campus is being contacted i wMmmMmmmmffm. more often by those wishing to donate to the scholarship fund, and she wants to let area business and private individuals know their contributions are greatly appreciated. Scholarships are typically offered and awarded in the spring. The application date for several scholarships has passed, but there is still some time to apply for others. Lists of potential scholarship recipients are kept so that in the event a scholarship is awarded, but not accepted, another individual who will use the scholarship can be contacted. The USU Uintah Basin Branch Campus also has a three-wee- k scholarship push in the summer to pick up those who are undecided as well as those who have changed their minds and will be attending college here after all. flirafanftnqn First Security Bank - Main.
