Show ft r T UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. An Lube catches fire, neighbors extinguish ii By Cheryl Mecharn A fire starting with a spark and gasoline at Rods Mini Lube last Thursday evening, April 9, in Roosevelt could have been much worse, but thanks to the quick action of two Murray Motor employees, the damage was held to a min- imum. Just about closing time, two employees were working an electrical transfer pump at the Mini Lube located on 290 East 200 South when a wire was inadvertently pulled from the battery that powered it, causing a spark. The spark ignited the gasoline in the middle bay. Rod Elder, owner operator was present at the time of the fire. He saw flames and took a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze while an employee phoned for assistance, and another turned a water hose on the blaze. They tried to call 911, but it rang off the wall, they couldn't get through," Elder said. Meanwhile, Kelly Harvey nnd Utah Agricultural price down slightly Prices received by Utah farmers and ranchers during h were down from February for all milk, barley, and other hay. February sheep and lamb prices were down from January. h The Utah all milk price was $13.70 per cwt, down 20 cents from the previous month but up $1.10 from March 1997. Barley, at $2.27 per bushel, was down 7 cents from the previous month and down 42 cents from March 1997. Baled alfalfa hay was $82.00 per ton, $1.00 higher than the previous month and down $2.00 from March 1997. Other hay, at $67.00 per ton, was up $14.00 from last year. The February 1998 sheep price was $37.00 per cwt, down $3.00 from January 1998 and $2.00 more than February 1997. The February lamb price, at $76.00 per cwt, was $1.00 lower than January 1998 and $19.00 lower than February 1997. One fataljty, one injured over Easter weekend Tom Rasmussen, employees of Murray Motor saw a plume of smoke descending above the Mini Lube. They called 911, made the connection, grabbed a fire extinguisher each and rushed to help. Rod says he and his employees were fighting the blaze but just couldn't put it out. They saved the day, one (extinguisher) at a time just wasnt doing it, Elder reported. The Roosevelt Fire Department arrived quickly, but by then, things were under control, Elder says, adding that the fire destroyed a large bay door, melting the aluminum and breaking the glass. He believes damage will run about $ 10,000, but says he is grateful that no one was injured fighting the fire. Harvey says she and Rasmussen learned how to operate a fire extinguisher for safety training at Murray Motor. Friday, the morning after the blaze Elder was open for business as usual. BALLARD PARK mid-Marc- I fire which broke out in Rod' s Mini Lube last week SMOKE AND FIRE--could have been worst had it not been for quick thinking and the valiant efforts of neighbors. A Irresponsible parents endanger school kids The children attending East Elementary are still at risk because of a few irresponsible parents says Annette Bolton, East Elementary PTA president Bolton approached WESTEND CONCERNS mid-Marc- Continued from page 1 be part of the plans. As well, an operation and maintenance budget will be required to ensure that the park remains attractive and functional. Wold says the community, together with the Uintah Recreation District, have contributed funds and volunteer labor toward the project and much has already been accomplished in preparation. The district contributed $18, 000, and weve had the best volunteers, Wold said, reporting that those volunteers have begun preparation by laying water and sewer lines. Theyve also kept busy during the waiting game by starting fencing work and have have rough built the restroom maintenance building. The city has also retained a portion of funds for cement work. Wold says, which can be poured anytime. Continued from page 1 leeching out into under ground water. Kappen is also concerned that production water from injection wells being forced to the top of casings is ending up in water wells. The commissioner's concerns may well be from personal experience, Kappen says eight years ago his water well soured when an oil well was drilled just a third of a mile from his home. It started smelling like production water and we cant use it anymore, it turned brackish." Kappens neighbor just one mile south ofthe Bluebell Store also had a well go bad. After pulling the casing, his neighbor found black stuff. I dont have proof, butwere going to go ahead and test for contamination ofour well, Kappen said, adding that the county will also request that Health Department to run tests to see what weve got. Once water contamination is identified the county can take steps to dean up water systems. As far as disposal well systems, Nielson suggested that commissioners meet with the Division of Oil Gas and Miningto gather information concerning permit information regarding disposal well renewal permits. Illegal dumping is another environmental health concern which the county continues to battle, Kappen reported. Commissioners have also ordered investigation of illegal dump sites and are implementing a fine that is as harsh as we can legally get by with. The county is also in the process of forming a Land Use Committee to help decision making regarding future land uses and solid waste concerns, and has partnered with Wasatch County to apply for a state permit regarding a newly developed cell at the land fill which will expand the area and allow for disposal of solid ty Taxes Take Biggest Share of Family Budget Federal, State and Local Taxes 40 i ll Recreation 5 Housing 16 waste. Bolton also asked if the city could paint double yellow lines up 400 North to discourage parents from crossing into the oncoming traffic lane while droppi ng offtheir youngsters. She also told the council that the crosswalk lines are hard to see and need repainting. Mayor Dennis Jenkins said that the city would look into the matter, however, Bolton was counseled to work through the school district to add a drop off point and additional parking area for parents. A few irresponsible parents make it dangerous for the kids, Bolton said, adding that some parents continually park in the red zone, cross lanes of traffic and pass other parents who have slowed for children. Boltons term as PTA president will end in just one month, she says adding that she wants to make sure that these problems are taken care after she steps down. IT In two unrelated incidents, one Vernal man was killed and one was seriously injured over the Easter Holiday weekend during outdoor activities. In the first incident, Friday, April 10, several young people were rock climbing on Blue Mountain in Uintah County when Hank Swink, 17, Vernal, apparently lost his footing and fell from a cliff. When Central Dispatch was notified, Jensen fire department emergency medical personnel were the first to respond to assist Uintah County sheriffs search and rescue responded to assist as well as deputies from the Uintah County sheriffs office. Swink was transported by ambulance to Vernal where he was taken by Life Flight to Salt Lake City for treatment of his injuries. In the second incident, a Vernal family was riding their ATVs in the Steinaker Draw area of Uintah County, just north of Vernal when they found a person who appeared to be dead. The family called Central Dispatch and deputies from the Uintah County sheriffs office were dispatched to the scene. After conducting the investigation, sheriff Rick Hawkins states that it appears that the male was out arrowhead hunting and apparently fell from a cliff sustaining various injuries. This incident probably occurred late Friday afternoon and the male attempted to crawl back to his vehicle when he expired , however the investigation is continuing and we will have more facts when the investigation is concluded. The victim, John Bob Dare, 36, of Vernal died as a result of injuries he sustained from the foil. Sheriff Hawkins would also like to commend both the Jensen fire department and the Uintah County search and rescue for their quick response time as well as their in- - valuable assistance.
