Clayton left Winter Quarters, now northern Omaha, in 1847 with Brigham Young and the vanguard of the Mormon emigration to the valley of the Great Salt Lake. Enroute he participated in the development of an odometer attached to a wagon wheel making possible the accurate measurement of distances along the way. Clayton returned to Winter Quarters that feu and wrote what would become the finest guidebook on the Monnon TraiL He took a steamboat down to SL Louis, had booklet published his little in Feb. 1848, returned to Winter Quarters, and before long the book was selling easily for die then astronomical sum of $5. The Patrice Press is headed by Gregory M. Franz wa, who has written two popular books on the Oregon Trail: The Oregon Trail Revisited, now in its sixth printing, and Maps of the Oregon Trail, m its third edition. The new book was first published in 1983, after Franzwa contacted Dr. Kimball to annotate the book so that present-da- y travelers could relate Clayton's toponyms to modern names along the way. "For example," Franzwa said, Kimball "Prof. explains that Clayton's 'Pape' in reality is today's Big Papillion River, which the emigrants crossed in. what is now northwestern Omaha, and he then goes on to describe the origin of die term in context with the opening of the West Kimball presents similar annotation to most of Claytons entries. The book, now enlarged from the original 24 pages to 117, locates Claytons points of reference on a series of strip maps. It also reproduces some of the maps of die Monnon pioneers had with them on their trip west There is even a copy of the hymn the Mormons refer to as their it is 'Come, Come, Marseilles' Ye Saints, written by Clayton himself during the bitter exodus from Nauvoo in the winter of 184647. Franzwa said that the route west from Omaha is properly known as the "North Bank Road," the "Council Bluffs Road," and simply the "California Trail," in addition lo the 'Mormon Trail." He said that far mare 24-pa- - ns traveled to the West over that road dun Mormons. - "Nevertheless,' he added, 'the superb Mormon historians have plenty of reason for adding the name of their church to the road. Their role in the development of the American West, and especially the area between the Wasatch front and the Sierra Nevada, was of enormous importance." The book is introduced by Dr. James B. Allen, another noted Mormon historian and Clayton's fust edition, in hardcover, sold out in two years, and Patrice issued a low-copaperback in 1987. That version has been out of print since 1991. The present printing was inspired by the 1997 sesquicentennial of the journey of the pioneer company to the Salt Lake Valley. The book is available at many western book stores for $13.95. ft is also available by mail from the press. Box 85639, Tucson AZ 85754-563There is a 3.95 charge for shipping.
