Before anyone becomes dead set against the idea, or promotes it as the only way to go let s give the committee a chance to do their It shouldnt come as a surprise to anyone that the Duchesne County School District can not afford to maintain the spots extra curricular lifestyle it has enjoyed in the past The school district spends hundreds of thousands of dollars sending teams from four different high schools thousands of miles annually to play in sporting events throughout the state. And with the realignment of two of our four teams next year 'those costs are expected to double. . For this reason the school board has assembled a special committee to investigate the best way to utilize their recreation and special transportation budgets. One scenario could be the possible consolidation of Duchesne, Altamont, and Tabiona for the purpose of joining sporting events, and possibly other activities into one team. The issue of consolidation is going to be fought on two fronts: Those arguing for it on the basis of economics and those arguing against it on the grounds of everything from rivalries, to logistics and the lost age-ol- d EDITOR'S NOTE: The Uintah Basin welcomes Standard and encourages opinions from readers iot he form of letters to the editor. This family came to Utah in Th job. They must first take an unbiased look at the issue, the school board has said they will get out of the way and let the committee do their job, a move we applaud. The committee must investigate the quality of the schools, take into account the vital roles schools play - particularly in rural communities, and of course dig deep into the aspect of economics. The task the committee is faced with isnt an enviable one, they must have the input of all inrespect and common-sens- e volved as they begin the steps which will ultimately result in a recommendation to the school board to determine whether consolidation is in our future, or to what degree we can continue to finance four separate high school teams. 1848. Angered, Allen Williams Legislators accused of caving in Dev Editor In the waning moments of the 1997 Utah Legislature our legislators went behind closed doors with our tax and spend and caved in to his tax It would sure be nice to what kind of deals they really made behind those dosed doors. It would also be nice to know how those that represented us voted and why. You can only wonda at what kind of FORK was around to buy the votes heeded. Our governor has to be walking on air. Not only did be get all the money he wanted in his budget, but the legislature even went a step furtha and gave him more tax than he had ask for. Rememba, he was only arising for a gas tax increase of 4 12 cents, but the legislature gave him five cents. I guess our governor and are just couldnt stand having the U. of Utah basketball id higher nationally than Before all these new taxes were added this year, Utah ranked 5th in the nation as to the tax burden placed on its citizens. Now we may move into 4th or even 3rd place as a result of these new taxes. According to a recent study, the average taxpayer must work 56 days each year just to pay for state and local taxes. At five work days a week, that means you must work ova two months just to pay for state and local taxes. Since Utah ranks in the top five for taxes, how many more days must we work to pay our state and local taxes? Most people in Utah opposed the gas and registration tax increase, but those that represented us didn't seem to care. Oh, they win remind us how hard they but actions spade . etc than words. Evidently, they have forgotten who they serve and they figure that most of us will forget about it by next election. Let us not forget what they did and whea they come to us next time for oar vote, we remind diem how well they served us in 1997. There are ways id fight these taxes. In the past our family has maintained three vehicles. As a result of these new taxes we have decided to get by with one. Agent McPheters was contacted by Salt Lake County law officers to assist in rounding up Raymond, offica Littlewhiteman accompanied him because he was familiar with the area of the reservation where . the Valdez home is located. They also said they would shoot ha son if they found him, she stated. . An expert witness hired by the , plaintiffs testified that Valdez was suffering from Traumatic Stress Disorda due to the actions of the lawmen. But a medical doctor and from Indian Health in Fort Duchesne testified for the defendants, telling jurors that they had treated Valdez earlia for the problems she claimed to have suffered after the search. Fnil Brown, a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice who defended me officers, reiterated their claims that they had good to " believe Raymond was that they had Valdezs to search the home.
