Show I UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. September 24. Duchesne County's Last 100 Years: Memories, our windows on the past By Janey Kokett I've often wondered what I would write if I had to describe my life in a few words. Which memories would I pass on, which would be lost. Sometimes it's the little things that you remember most The following "windows" on the past are taken from sections of the book, "Cherished Memories," sent to me by Naomi Lunt. Lunt is granddaughter and daugthcr to Pete and Ray Dillman and grew np in the Basin. As you read this, what memories pass before your eyes? Lunt wrote, "I remember Mr. Glenn, his small bent frame, coming down the street in his weather beaten old wagon. The sorrel hones, as stable as Mr. Green. His old split bucket being Filled with vegetables, which Mother would order. He always handed me a tomato, a turnip, or a delicious green pea. I remember Benjamin Harris. He rode a huge white horse. He lived between Roosevelt and Myton Bench...We all ran to see him come down the street He told us that he was "King. Benjamin" and had once been "Abraham." I remember the old wooden ice box. It sat on the closed in porch, right by the back door. The ice man, Bruce Calder, came with his rounded tong, piercing it into the large block of ice.. .dragging it into the ice box. It slowly melted, running down through a tube to a pan on the floor under the ice box which would catch the water. Sometimes, we would forget to empty it and the water would run over onto the floor. The old icehouse was a bam that had been filled with sawdust. It was about two blocks from our home. Mr. Calder had a pond close by that he cut the ice in the winter and rolled and buried it in the sawdust Many days we would go to the old shed and play in the wet soggy wood. The old fire bell is one part of my memories that makes me smile. It was a huge school type bell, placed on a pyramid frame, about 12 feet high. A rope came down through the center and was tied too Tor the youth of the city to We would climb the poles, the rope, pull, ring, and run One time mother left me with Sister Anderson. She lived .in Ballard. She was from Sweden and I remember my father say, "she is indeed as close to being an angel as any living person could be." had a pond just behind the We'd go swimming there and the thick red mud would ooze up to our knees. The large poplar trees "which separated die sidewalk and the dirt road were my best friends. I spent many hours climbing them. I loved to get close to the top and hang by my knees and swing. I got so I could hang by my toes. Guess this is why I wore a size nine shoe when I was in the 7th grade. Dad put a long, long pole between two trees and then put up an old chain swing. How I loved to ;o up in the sky! I would go so igh that Dad would grab me by the heels and pull, sending me higher and higher, never stopping until the chair would jump. I remember the old bam and the granary that Dad had (nought in. That barn was a special place. We swung from the loft, we jumped, from the top of the partitions in the granary into the cool wheat bins, squishing our toes in the wheat It was a super place to play rubber we almost put out an guns-on- ce eye of Reed Clegg what his head DHS FHA .
