The workshop was one of six to be presented at several rural Utah locations this month. Dr. Wayne B. Ringer, extension energy program leader, Utah State University, said that the workshop was not intended to "discourage or fuel producencourage" tion, but, rather to provide the on Families. Fre Chief Burke Eldredge emphasized that the tanker will serve the people who it. The governments of Duchesne County, and . Uintah County appropriated the funds necessary to acquire the vehicle and to pay for its fitting out as a fire department vehicle. The GMC chassis was purchased locally, after bidding, from Murray chasMoton, Roosevelt The two-to- n sis has been in Salt Lake for the extensive body work necessary to fit the specifications of the fire depar- capable of 200 gallons per minute discharge through a maximum of three lines. "This addition will help us maintain our current fire insurance rates, said Chief Eldredge. "We will definitely increase our firefighting efficiency. Eldredge indicated that the 15 man force is currently sufficient to man the departments vehicles, including the new tanker. "We have been at 15 men since Ive been on the force, said Eldredge, "and we may be reaching the pomt where we are at the borderline as far as manpower is concerned. Assistant Chief Fred Goodhue indicated that the new tanker would be the "first line unit of the volunteer pump . Capacity of the tanker is 1250 gallons. The truck is equipped with a done in South America. JuTett will embark next spring on a project involving three identical tractors, in which he will try various amounts and types of alcohol and diesel fuel, and study horsepower loss, wear and tear on characteristics, engines, hard-stawater segregation, and vapor-locother matters of particular concern to farmers interested in producing and using fuel from grain, animal and the like. Other fuel possibilities discussed during the workshop included sunflower oil which has a chemical composition very like diesel fueL According to the John Deere Tractor Co., diesel fuel may go to $2 per gallon in another year, and sunflower oil is under study despite its tendency to increase carbon build-u- p on fuel injectors and to induce plugging in the ring area of tractor engines. Ike workshop participants were offered information by Farmers Home Administration personnel on loans available for fuel production, and fact sheets on converting automobiles to run on alcohol fuels, safety requirements for use of gasohol methane production from animal manure, and Utah laws governing gasohol production. rapidly, with changes in the world oil market, and that the government is actively promoting alternative fuel sources. The whole farm economy depends on fuel availability," Ringer said. The workshop included a detailed video-tap- e presentation of a "practice still, with explanations of each stage of the alcohol production process, from preparation of the raw materials, such as grain, through fermentation and cooking, to "prooT testing. The demonstration unit has reportedly obtained a product as high as 180 proof (90 percent alcohol) on a second run through the process. Dr. Von H. Jarrett, extension agricultural engineer, Utah State University, discussed a number of disadvantages associated with alcohol production, most notably that two chemists at USU had worked on a still for three months without getting alcohol. Jarrett said, "Those people back in Kentucky have a knack for it we have yet to learn. He added that high altitudes and odd climates contribute problems of their own to the use of fuel with any appreciable water content, since frost can be destructive to an internal combustion engine. "Alcohol also dissolves gaskets, he said, whether they, are of neoprene, rubber or fabric. Jarrett expressed the opinion that MI-547- e gallons of water per minute through up to three lines. While it is doubtful that pumpkin pie was served at the first Thanksgiving in 1621, because sweeteners were in short supply, stewed or baked pumpkin probably did appear on that table set for 55 colonists, Chief Massasoit and his 90 braves. Native Americans, especially the Cherokee and Seneca, were excellent termers and grew several varieties of squssh, including pumpkin. They tsught the Pilgrims how to grow, code and dry this nutritious gourd-lik- e fruit, used by the colonists as a fall and winter staple during the first years of settlement Pilgrims ' called pumpkins pompions," an old French word from the Greek, meaning "codied by the sun. When cooked by the colonists, pumpkins were often stewed and mind with Indian meal for bread. An easy pumpkin pudding was made by slicing the top off a small pumpkin, removing the fiber and seeds and filling tiie hollow with milk. The top was replsced and the pumpkin baked until the milk was absorbed by the pulp. Spiced apple stuffing was also used in baked pumpkins. No one knows when the first pumpkin pie was baked in the colonies, but the first recipe for the New England delicacy wu published in 1796 in Amelia Simmons' "American This clsssic text also Cookery. contained the first published "receipts for cranberry sauce and watermelon rind pickles; also appearing were the first recipes ever to call for corn. Town records from around this time indicate that pumpkin pie was ' considered such an essential part of Thanksgiving dinner that when there was no molasses, some New England villages postponed the celebration until molasses could be brought in. To keep pumpkins fresh between the first. frost and Thanksgiving, some re-sourceful homemakers of this period would leave a long piece of vine on the pumpkin when it was harvested. They would stick the vine in a jar of milk which supplied the vegetable with nutrients and moisture as it continued to grow. Modern cooks don't have such problems, but whether they use fresh or canned pumpkin for holiday pies, they and their guests will get vitamins and minerals as well as a taste treat. One-hal- f cup cooked pumpkin supplies more than a day's requirement of vitamin A and only 40 calories. Pumpkin is also rich in phosphorus, calcium and iron. Nothing adds elegance and accents pumpkin pie's spiciness like real whipped cream. If you like this topping sweenened a bit, try using honey for a new taste.
