Show APOSTLE BRIGHAM YOUNG DEAD was president of the quorum of apostles of the mormon church apostle brigham young president ot of the quorum of twelve son of the famous leader of the mormon church and next in line of succession to pres ident joseph r smith for that pc I 1 tion died at his home in salt lake cit at 10 40 p in saturday death which ensued after an illness of over a years year a duration was due primarily to cirrhosis of the liver this led to dropsy and his condition was made still worse by a recent attack of bron brigham young a member of the council of twelve apostles since 1868 and president of at that body since the death of franklin D richards was the son of president brigham young and mary ann angell he ile was born december 18 1836 at kirtland 0 his father in 1833 was a widower with two little girls and he married mary ann angel as a result of a fast meet ing in kirtland during which it was revealed to the elder brigham that she was designed for him brigham jr was the third child of this marriage and he was born amid all the untoward circumstances of the early days in the church he was a twin but his twin sister mary died at the age of 7 apostle youngs young s eldest recollection was a scene of the painful and mob dobbings bings of his people in the mis illinois days in 1839 the tarn fam lly illy moved to montrose which was across the river from nauvoo bhele brigham young was baptized by hi III father in the mississippi river in 1845 he ile underwent as a small boy the sut suf fering accompanying the removal of the saints to winter quarters and the trip across the plains to the salt lake valley on november 5 1858 when 19 years of age he was married to catherine a herine curtis spencer and abbat sixteen months later he yielded cobeill ence to the principle of plural mar ariage by marrying jane carrington his early doys in the valie valle fraught with many hardships ae a ha han ing served as a scout during the echo canyon war while out reconnoitering in the mountains suffering great hard ships he ile was also one of the relief party sent back to meet a handcart company of emigrants on which trip he was attacked by inflammatory rheumatism in april 1861 he was ordained a member of the high council of the salt lake stake and in the spring of 1862 he accompanied delegate bernhisel to the states after arriving in new york he a letter from his father calling him on a mission and comply ing with this call he sailed for europe and arrived at liverpool july 26 he ile labored principally Dally in london but visited scandinavia and other parts marts of europe returning home in 1863 he was a ordained an apostle by III his S father brigham young on reb 4 but he be did not become a member of the twelve apostles cuprum until october 1868 when he was chosen to fill a vacancy caused by the selection of george A siruth as a counselor in the first presidency in 1864 apostle young was called on another mission to great britain for the purpose of assisting president daniel H wells in the presidency of the Euro european nean shortly after bis his arr arrival lal there he be succeeded prest dent wells as president dint 0 at the european mission plis slon during his stay there he extensively and in 1865 received a request from hs his father ather to return to utah for a visit and sailed for home after a few months at home apostle young returned to england and resumed charpe charge of the mission but he remained there only a short while sailing finally for home with his ills for a time he had charge of the flairs of the church in cache stake he ile was there until the of that stake in 1877 at the general conference in 1873 he was chosen as one of the five counselors to bri brinham hain young and acted in that capacity until his father died apostle young served several terms in the utah le legislature made a nuin her ber of trips east in the interest of the church and occupied numerous eions of honor honer and trust of late wars he has traveled extensively in utah arizona new mexico Ce colorado lorado and old mexico the various stakes of the cb cli arch while visiting visit lne tinz the yaqui indians in mexico in 1882 he be was attacked by yellow vellow fever and was at the point of death from 1890 to 1883 he was aaen in charge of tho the Fu european roDean and since then un til ti his long illness he hp has traveled ie tween the carlol s stakes of zion in the interest of his faith alth |
