Show The National Enterprise, August 24, 1977 Page ten Women finding access to business thanks to Phoenix Center Counseling The Center has outside their homes, Kelson says Phoenix applied for a $300,000 CETA grant to establish a counseling program for displaced homemakers," mature women new to the job market. Director Jinnah Kelson says no organization presently exists to provide counseling services to women who are forced into the world of business by family death, divorce or the "empty nest syn- drome." These women fall through the cracks in the system," she says. The Center estimates 7,000 women along the Wa- satch Front fit the category of displaced homemaker" and these women find they must g take jobs since lack they training and experience. The average woman has three jobs in her lifetime, one as a mother. Kelson says. Job placement, training and counseling are essential if a woman is to compete in the job market, she says. This year, 55 percent of women in the United States low-payin- up-to-da- te worked Hotel gets face lift assertive- bringing the figure from 1.5 million in 1940 to more than 12 million working women in 1970. The figure is expected to jump to 60 percent by 1980. Age and inexperience are the major disadvantages for displaced homemakers. Kel- son says. "Most employers look at women as until workers. she explains. They will work until they become pregnant, until they are married, or until they earn enough to pay for a car." This viewpoint causes what Kelson calls the double bind," where employers offer low salaries to compensate for short-teremployment expected from a female. The woman accepts the job, but since the pay is not compensatory, works only a short time. The double bind is reinforced this way, she says. The displaced homemaker program will be similar to ongoing projects at the Center, which stress assertiveness and job counseling for today's male and female m workers. Assertiveness is essential if women are to compete with men for management positions," Kelson says. Unfortunately, women are trained to be passive; men, aggressive. With assertiveness, both men and women can be winners." The Phoenix Center was established two years ago and has since increased its counseling services from 20 clients a month to over 300. It has provided seminars on assertiveness and group organization for such businesses as Roy Rogers restaurants, Blue-gras- s Turf Farms and Westminster and Weber State col- new $200,000 phone system in 61-year-- the 300-roo- hotel. m Sine has hired Ellerbee Architects of St. Paul to de- According to Wesley the three-yea- r remodeling project by Steenberg Construction Co. of St. Paul, Minn, includes renovating the building facade, repaving the Newhouse parking lot and recarpeting, furnishing and decorating the hotel interior.
