Mont Crosland, president of Century, says prospective customers have had trouble getting envirodomes past municipal building departments, since codes were written for structures with four upright walls and flat or pitched roofs, and the igloo- shaped fiberglas structure isnt readily accepted. Having developed the envirodome with the help of a Brigham Young University computer seven years ago, Crosland says only 33 of the prefabricated structures have been sold and built in the United States. Approval by the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) and the FHA would help sell the structures, he admits. ICBO, whose approval generally precedes FHA approval, received a vague and undcscriptive application for approval of the Envirodome several years ago, and took no action at that time, officials there say. Crosland says he has to the group, submitting detailed data on construction materials and engineering strategy to ICBOs California office three weeks ago. He expects a response within three months, and anticipates FHA approval shortly thereafter. Then well be ready to roll, Crosland declares. The envirodome is built from only four varieties of rere-appli- ed inforced three-inch-thic- k fiberglas panels, complete with conduit and electrical boxes. Both the interior and exterior of the panels are finished in fiberglas which, says Cros- should become operational during the big sales push. The dome boasts an inand sulation factor of costs between $25 and $30 a square foot to construct, he adds. Marketing of the house is being handled by Mark IV, which is currently gearing up for a big push in the dome home market next year. Century has sold fabricating and marketing franchises in Although only three Big Als have opened in Salt Lake City this year, the company has big plans for the next two years. McGeary says he has sold seven distributorships which are supposed to manage 25 franchises each. Targeted at small business owners, the Big Als franchise sells for $10,000, with the condition the franchisee spend another $30,000 for construction and inventory.
